Blizzard hasn’t announced anything yet, but fans are already worried. Mysterious new currency in WoW: Midnight is causing concern

The upcoming World of Warcraft: Midnight expansion will finally let players own homes in the game. However, players are worried about a recently discovered new currency that will be added with the expansion, even though the release is still some time away.

The first premium currency in WoW?

Wowhead has found a new currency called Hearthsteel in the early test version of Midnight. Images show these are silver coins with a swirl in the middle shaped like a house. This likely means players will use Hearthsteel to buy things for their player homes, like furniture and decorations.

While it hasn’t been officially confirmed, recent images suggest Hearthsteel could be a premium currency bought with real money. It looks like it might be sold in bundles through an in-game store.

It’s not unexpected that Blizzard wants to make money from player housing, but it’s important to realize this would be the first time they’ve ever introduced a premium currency to World of Warcraft. Currently, players buy cosmetic items directly with real money, and this new currency, Hearthsteel, would probably work like Platinum in Diablo IV – meaning players would likely need to buy packages with more currency than they actually need.

So, Blizzard hasn’t said anything official about this yet, but it looks like they’re planning to talk about it closer to when Midnight comes out. What’s got everyone buzzing is the idea of a special currency just for housing. It feels like they might be planning to really push how people spend money on their homes in the game. And honestly, it’s a little worrying! Plus, they recently redesigned the in-game store, and it’s definitely drawing your eye to bigger, more expensive things – like houses and huge furniture packs. It all feels connected, and a lot of us are a bit concerned about how it’ll all work.

I was hoping they’d just sell decorations directly, but creating a whole new currency just to get more money from players – instead of letting us use our existing Battle.net funds – feels dishonest. It’s predictable: they’ll likely price an item at, say, 510 tokens, but only sell tokens in packs of 500, forcing us to spend extra.

We’re now waiting for Blizzard to officially announce the release of World of Warcraft: Midnight. While there’s no confirmed date yet, leaks suggest it will launch on February 26, 2026.
