Lord of the Rings fan spends 10 hours walking to Mount Doom in 18-year-old game

A dedicated Lord of the Rings fan recently completed a virtual recreation of Frodo’s entire quest – from the Shire to Mount Doom – within the 18-year-old online game, Lord of the Rings Online. The journey took them 10 hours to complete.

Boromir famously said it was impossible to simply walk into Mordor, but it turns out you can – in a video game. A dedicated player created a detailed route in the game, and it takes about 10 hours to complete. It’s surprisingly straightforward, once you have the map!

I’ve been totally hooked on this YouTube channel, ‘Emulated Vintage Gaming’! They’re doing something incredible – they’re playing through the entire Lord of the Rings game, literally walking Frodo all the way from the cozy Shire to the terrifying Mount Doom. It’s a huge undertaking, and people are loving it!

According to PCGamer, the team spent months preparing before they could reveal their continuous, nine-hour and 46-minute playthrough.

Lord of the Rings Online player walks from Bag End to Mount Doom

A video showing a gamer meticulously recreate Frodo’s entire journey from the Shire to Mordor is becoming popular online, with many impressed by the player’s commitment to faithfully following the books and movies.

The game used recordings of Andy Serkis, the actor who played Gollum, to narrate the audiobooks and bring the game’s world to life. These recordings vividly describe the different locations and Frodo’s journey through them.

The player explained they chose to attempt this feat in the 18-year-old game because it offers the most realistic depiction of Tolkien’s world.

According to a recent interview with PCGamer, one YouTuber stated that Lord of the Rings Online offers the most immersive experience of Tolkien’s world yet, surpassing many other attempts to bring his creation to life in the last fifty years.

When beginning a new game, the developers hid most of the on-screen interface to create a more immersive experience, removing things like notifications and even the names of other players on their journey to Mount Doom.

But before they started performing, a lot of preparation was needed. They carefully planned the show by both practicing and thoroughly studying Tolkien’s writings.

The creator began work in May, 2025, and the finished video made it to YouTube on October 31, 2025.

Following the great response to this video, the creators are planning to make more focusing on other characters like Aragorn or Pippin. They feel this is possible because those characters’ stories take place across a broader range of locations already featured in the LOTRO game.
