Season 22 of Grey’s Anatomy has reunited Dr. Cass Beckman (Sophia Bush) and Dr. Teddy Altman (Kim Raver), though their connection seemed destined to fail from the beginning. Cass and Teddy initially met while having dinner with their husbands, Dr. David Beckman (Wil Traval) and Dr. Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd). After both husbands were called back to the hospital, the two doctors decided to continue their evening together, moving from the formal restaurant to a more casual bar next door.
Teddy and Cass were sharing details about their relationships when Cass explained that she and her husband, David, had briefly tried an open marriage during a difficult time, and it actually helped them. Later, Cass mistakenly thought Teddy was open to the same arrangement and kissed her, but Teddy clarified that she and her husband, Owen, were not. Eventually, Teddy and Owen decided to explore an open marriage, and Teddy started a romantic encounter with Cass. However, Teddy stopped things when she realized she felt like she was being unfaithful to Owen.
After Teddy and Owen broke up, she unexpectedly saw Cass again while at the hospital. They decided to pursue a relationship and became intimate. The next day, however, they ran into Owen at the hospital, creating a very uncomfortable situation for all three of them.
Teddy was short with Cass when Cass offered to help while she was with a patient, but she quickly apologized, explaining that seeing Owen had upset her. They made up, but their relationship is unlikely to last.
Cass & Teddy’s Relationship Is Unhealthy

Cass and Teddy’s relationship on Grey’s Anatomy is complicated and potentially damaging because they are both still married to other people. Cass is comfortable with her open marriage to David, but Teddy is still heartbroken over her split from Owen, who she considers the love of her life. They had a long and difficult journey to get together, so Teddy needs time to heal before she can move forward.
Even though Teddy didn’t rush into things with Cass, it still seems too soon for her to be seeing someone else – especially considering he’s married and seeing other people too. Cass felt relieved when she decided to open up her marriage, but Teddy felt bad about the situation. This difficult beginning suggests their relationship won’t last.
Teddy Doesn’t Really Seem Happy With Cass
Cass is happy with their open relationship, but Teddy is struggling with being apart from Owen. While helping Dr. Jo Wilson buy a car, Teddy broke down crying, realizing she wouldn’t be making family memories in her own vehicle anymore. It seems Cass is currently just a lighthearted diversion for Teddy, rather than someone she sees a long-term future with.
I just don’t see a future for Cass and Teddy. It’s becoming clear she can’t give him what he truly needs – a lasting relationship where he’s accepted as part of a family, along with her kids. They’re just not going to be able to build that kind of life together, and it’s heartbreaking to watch.
Cass Shouldn’t Have Forgiven Teddy So Easily

Teddy reacted strongly to Cass after Cass spoke sharply to her at work. Cass was deeply worried because her patient, Nora Young (Floriana Lima), who’d recently undergone a new type of heart surgery, was experiencing chest pain – which ended up being just indigestion. While Teddy’s fear was understandable, it didn’t justify her treatment of Cass. The situation was further complicated by the fact that Nora is an old friend of Owen’s, and they had previously had an affair when he was married.
After Teddy apologized, Cass explained her hesitation about taking their relationship beyond their hotel room. She was worried things could become complicated, but admitted it could also be wonderful, making it worth the risk. While Cass was understanding, she’d initially jokingly accused Teddy of seeing her as only good for casual conversation in bed.
Cass was too quick to forgive Teddy, considering how badly she’d been treated. Teddy led Cass on, making her feel like a casual encounter instead of someone Teddy wanted a real relationship with. But since Cass is already married, she’s not in a position to be in a relationship either. They both have too many issues and it’s best if they simply accept that their connection isn’t going to work out.
What started as a fun and exciting connection between Teddy and Cass is now clearly falling apart. Teddy needs a level of support that Cass can’t provide, especially as she navigates her divorce from Owen. Their connection is getting too serious, which wasn’t the intention at the beginning. They had a good run, but it looks like this romance is about to end.
