I’ve always wanted to make another ‘True Lies’ movie with Arnold [Schwarzenegger]. But it seems unlikely. It would really only work if James Cameron wrote the script, because we wouldn’t want to do it without him. ‘True Lies’ was a film that had a huge impact on my life.

As soon as the first True Lies movie came out, people started planning a sequel. However, Cameron chose to make Titanic instead. Following the huge success of Titanic, Cameron revisited the idea of True Lies 2, and Jamie Curtis and Arnold Schwarzenegger agreed to return as the original characters.

The movie’s development process took longer than expected, and after the 9/11 attacks, director James Cameron realized the premise of an action comedy about terrorism no longer felt appropriate. He explained that the national mood of devastation made it impossible to find humor in the subject matter. He and his team attempted to rewrite the script, but Cameron felt that if they couldn’t make it genuinely funny, it wasn’t worth pursuing.

Plus, it had a great sense of humor and felt like America’s answer to James Bond with the character of Harry Tasker.

Many consider True Lies to be James Cameron’s most overlooked film, and it still holds up remarkably well today. It represents a time when studios took big risks with filmmaking. While computer-generated imagery was beginning to be used in 1994, Cameron stuck with impressive practical effects. True Lies is a thrilling action movie, but even though Jamie Lee Curtis would love to reprise her role, it’s questionable whether a sequel would succeed by today’s standards.
