So, Australia’s getting serious about social media and kids. They’re banning anyone under 16, and it’s hitting Kick pretty hard – especially since Kick started in Australia! It’s kinda weird seeing a platform get restricted in the country where it was created, but that’s what’s happening. As a gamer who enjoys watching streams, it means younger viewers will have to find other ways to catch content, and Kick’s going to have to figure out how to deal with it.
Reddit is now included among the platforms that will be restricted for younger users, with these rules going into effect before the end of 2025.
The eSafety Commission has determined that these services, similar to popular platforms like TikTok, Snapchat, and Facebook, require age restrictions. The restrictions apply to services primarily designed for online social networking.
Following discussions with leading tech companies about what’s expected of them, Communications Minister Anika Wells has announced an updated list of requirements.
Kick among platforms to be banned for kids
Beginning December 10, 2025, online platforms could be fined up to $49.5 million if they allow children under 16 to create accounts. The eSafety Commission also stated that the services subject to these rules may change in the future.
TikTok, Meta, Snap, and other companies told lawmakers at a recent Senate hearing they’ll start preventing new users under 13 from creating accounts when a new law goes into effect. Some are also working on tools to let young users access their information or pause their accounts if needed.
Australia will soon ban Kick and Reddit for users under 16, adding them to a list that already includes Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, X, and Snapchat. These restrictions begin on December 10th.

The eSafety Commissioner, Julie Inman Grant, explained that the new rules are designed to protect children by limiting their early exposure to content recommended by algorithms, allowing them more time to develop and play without relying on online platforms.
Apps mainly used for sending messages, like WhatsApp, Messenger, and Roblox, aren’t affected by the new rules right now.
Meta announced its biggest-ever update to protect teenagers on October 14th, blocking content that could be considered suggestive for users under 18.
