Prime Video has renewed its young adult series, We Were Liars, for a second season. Author E. Lockhart has shared some details about how the show is being made and also hinted at a potential spin-off series.
According to Variety, author Karen M. McManus announced that her new novel, We Fell Apart: A We Were Liars Novel, is being released today, November 4th. The story will feature a completely new cast of characters and their own hidden secrets. McManus originally planned the book as a standalone story, but she later decided to expand it.
I was deeply involved with the TV adaptation of my book while also finishing this new one. As the show’s casting and filming progressed, the worlds of the two stories began to blend together. I realized they actually took place in the same universe! So, what started as a separate story naturally evolved into being connected to my other work.
Originally published in 2014 by Lockhart, the novel We Were Liars quickly became incredibly popular online and has since been made into a series for Prime Video.
I’m totally hooked on this new show! It centers around Cadence Sinclair, played by Emily Alyn Lind, and how she’s dealing with a terrible accident that really fractured her family. What’s even more intriguing is that everyone around her – her friends Johnny, Gat, and Mirren – seems to be keeping secrets. It feels like no one is telling the whole truth, and I’m desperate to figure out what’s going on!
I’m so excited for season two of We Were Liars! From what I’ve heard, they’re going to be diving into the backstory with Family of Liars and We Fell Apart, which I think will be amazing. But what I’m really looking forward to is seeing more of the Sinclair sisters, and how they became the women we met in the first season – especially getting a glimpse into their lives as mothers. It’s going to add so much depth to the story, I can just feel it!
In the season one finale, Johnny’s mother, Carrie, spoke to his ghost in a way that mirrored Cadence’s interactions with him throughout the season. This moment hints that Johnny might return, and that the show will further explore how the accident affected both Carrie and Cadence.

I’m so excited for season two! While Lockhart isn’t giving away too many details just yet, she did confirm they’re definitely going to be incorporating the story from Family of Liars. But the really cool part is, the showrunners are planning some twists and turns, so even if you’ve already read the book, you’re still in for some surprises!
The author has confirmed that Caitlin Fitzgerald, Candice King, Gummer, David Morse, Zada, and Lind will all be back for season two. While the first season of We Were Liars received a 60% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it still proved popular with viewers, staying in the top 10 TV shows in the U.S. for several months after it premiered.
