How I Met Your Mother has been available on Netflix for a while, but a recent notice has frustrated many fans, leading them to wonder if the show will be removed from the platform permanently.
2025 has already been a fantastic year for television! We’ve seen highly anticipated new seasons of popular shows like Severance, Wednesday, Andor, and The Last of Us, plus the returns of Squid Game, The Bear, Daredevil: Born Again, and Peacemaker. And now, fans are excited for the release of It: Welcome to Derry.
Plus, shows like the Netflix dramas Adolescence and The Pitt have become huge successes. And good news for fans – the fifth and final season of Stranger Things is coming out later this month!
Sometimes you just want a lighthearted show to watch while relaxing, like during dinner, and How I Met Your Mother is perfect for that. All nine seasons have been available on Netflix in the US since June 2024, but that might not last much longer.
Is How I Met Your Mother leaving Netflix?

Unfortunately, How I Met Your Mother will no longer be available on Netflix after next month. You have until December 2, 2025, to watch all nine seasons on the service.
The show isn’t arriving on the 1st of the month due to the terms of its licensing agreement. It became available on Netflix on June 3, 2024, and will be removed on December 3, 2025 – exactly 18 months after its arrival.
Just to confirm, Netflix now shows a warning that the series will be leaving soon. This is a common issue with streaming rights – shows often disappear as licenses expire, and it’s unfortunately something we can’t avoid.
Unlike shows and movies made directly by Netflix, many of the titles you see on the platform are actually rented from other studios and distributors. These agreements allow Netflix to stream content for a specific amount of time, usually anywhere from a few months to a few years.

When a license runs out, content is taken down unless it’s renewed. This system lets streaming services offer a lot of different movies and shows each month, but it also means favorites might suddenly become unavailable.
A well-known instance of this happened with the TV show Friends. After being available on Netflix in the US for years, it switched to HBO Max in January 2020 because of a deal made by Warner Bros.
For many years, “The Office” was hugely popular on Netflix. However, in 2020, Netflix lost the rights to stream the show, and NBCUniversal brought it back to its own streaming service, Peacock.
How to stream How I Met Your Mother

Even though How I Met Your Mother is no longer on Netflix, you can still stream it online. In the US, Hulu and Disney+ have all nine seasons available. Alternatively, you can purchase episodes from platforms like Amazon Prime Video.
Alternatively, you can purchase the complete series on DVD or Blu-ray. More people are choosing physical copies lately because streaming services often remove shows, making owning a set a reliable option.
You can currently get the complete nine seasons of How I Met Your Mother on DVD for $43.99 at Walmart. If you’re on a tight budget, you might also find used copies available.
Netflix subscribers “annoyed” by the news

Even with other streaming services available, Netflix users are upset about upcoming removals of content. One Redditor expressed their frustration, asking, “‘Leaving soon’? Seriously! I know Netflix does this, but where am I supposed to watch it again?”
One person expressed their frustration, saying they were really annoyed. Another added that once Stranger Things ends, they won’t find much to watch on Netflix anymore, because the service frequently removes shows and movies. They’ll likely keep their subscription, but it’s become a recurring and irritating issue.
The second person agreed, saying they only really watch The Ranch and How I Met Your Mother on the streaming service. Everything else, they feel, is either poorly made movies that don’t attract viewers, shows that get canceled quickly, or older movies that are only available for a short time before being taken down.
It’s only been a year since “How I Met Your Mother” was added to Netflix, and now it’s already being removed. Luckily, Google says you can find it on Hulu. You might need to start a subscription if you don’t have one, but honestly, I often get tired of Netflix anyway.
Many fans still champion physical media, like one person who recently started collecting DVDs because they were tired of content disappearing from streaming services. They jokingly stated, ‘If it’s not on Netflix, where is it? On my shelf, that’s where!’
I definitely think this is a good idea. DVD players are still available – you can even find affordable used ones at places like Goodwill. Alternatively, you could just use the optical drive in your computer if you have one.
Many viewers also discussed illegal ways to watch the show, referencing piracy. One person joked about finding it through unofficial sources, while another suggested piracy or buying physical copies as solutions.
Some people believe streaming services intentionally add “Leaving soon” notices to shows to get more viewers. One person explained that this seems to be a tactic to encourage people to start watching, and another agreed, recalling a time when a show, like Suits, was falsely labeled as leaving soon.
Just a heads-up: these reports haven’t been officially confirmed, but it looks like “How I Met Your Mother” will be removed from Netflix US next month. Enjoy it while you can, or maybe it’s time to start collecting DVDs!
