Rumored Black Panther Actor Addresses If He Is Replacing Chadwick Boseman

It’s still so hard to believe it’s been over five years since we lost Chadwick Boseman. He was such a huge part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and his passing at just 43 was heartbreaking. While Black Panther: Wakanda Forever showed T’Challa’s death, it was powerful to see Shuri step up and become the new Black Panther – a really fitting way to continue his legacy in the MCU.

Damson Idris recently addressed rumors about potentially playing T’Challa in the Marvel Cinematic Universe during an interview with Time. He dismissed the speculation, saying with a laugh, “No, no. I don’t know anything about it.”

Rumors about Idris Elba potentially replacing Michael B. Jordan as Black Panther gained traction recently at the Vogue World: Hollywood event. Angela Bassett, along with Black Panther stars Danai Gurira and Teyana Taylor, attended dressed as their characters, showcasing costumes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe film. Idris was seen walking the runway with Angela Bassett, which led to renewed speculation about a possible recasting.

Idris Elba has talked about potentially taking on the role of Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He first discussed it in an interview with TODAY on June 18, 2025, giving a rather mysterious answer. When asked directly with a simple ‘yes or no’ question, here’s what he said about his Marvel future:

Damson Idris: [Groans] Yes-no!

Craig Melvin: By the way, the Yes-No means yes!

Damson Idris: It could mean no! [Laughs]

Craig Melvin: If they asked, would you say yes?

Damson Idris: Yes.

Now that the Multiverse Saga is underway, there’s still a possibility for Idris Elba to play a version of Black Panther from a different universe, particularly with Phase 6 building towards the Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars films. But that isn’t the only way he could portray the famous superhero.

The ending of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever revealed T’Challa and Nakia’s son, Toussaint, potentially paving the way for him to become the next Black Panther as an adult. Idris Elba could potentially play this older version of T’Challa’s son, thanks to the time-travel element introduced in the film.

Letitia Wright will return as Black Panther in the upcoming movie Avengers: Doomsday, which finished filming on September 19, 2025. It’s currently unknown whether she will also appear in Avengers: Secret Wars.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe will be back in 2026 with the Disney+ series Wonder Man launching in January. Then, Spider-Man: Brand New Day will arrive in theaters on July 31st, followed by Avengers: Doomsday on December 18th.
