Okay, so Avengers 5 is just over a year away, and it’s supposed to kick off the big finale to this whole Multiverse Saga Marvel’s been building. But honestly, I’m hearing a lot of worries from other fans – and I get it. A lot of us feel like Doctor Doom just kind of appears out of nowhere, and there wasn’t enough groundwork laid for him in previous movies. Plus, with all the stuff that happened with the Kang storyline getting scrapped, there are a bunch of loose ends they need to tie up, and it feels like they might be rushing things. I’m still excited, but I’m definitely keeping my expectations tempered.
As a big MCU fan, I was so excited to hear that Avengers: Doomsday finished filming! It’s incredible that twenty-six of our favorite heroes returned. But honestly, even with that huge cast, it felt incomplete – a lot of characters we’ve come to love from the Multiverse Saga were missing, like Spider-Man and Daredevil. Now, one of the original Avengers has spoken out about not being included, and it really highlights how underused his character has been since Endgame. It’s frustrating to see such a great hero sidelined!
Hawkeye Isn’t Returning in Avengers: Doomsday
Actor Jeremy Renner, who has played Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2011’s Thor and The Avengers, has been discussing his future with the franchise. Despite being a long-standing member of the Avengers and recently appearing in the Hawkeye Disney+ series, Renner has indicated he won’t be in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars films. He even suggested Marvel use a different version of his character from another universe in Secret Wars. While other heroes like Hulk and Spider-Man were initially left off the Doomsday cast list but are still expected to appear, hope for Hawkeye’s return is fading. Renner recently confirmed this during interviews for his series Mayor of Kingstown, and again when fellow Avengers star Brie Larson asked him directly, suggesting his time as Hawkeye in the main MCU timeline is likely over.
Although it’s possible Jeremy Renner is keeping his return as Hawkeye under wraps, current information suggests he won’t be in Avengers: Doomsday. This is particularly frustrating because many of the original Avengers team members are expected to appear. Robert Downey Jr. is coming back as the villain Doctor Doom, and Chris Hemsworth will likely play Thor for the last time. Most fans believe Chris Evans will also return as Captain America, or a version of him, despite the actor’s statements. Mark Ruffalo is almost guaranteed to be back as Hulk, and rumors suggest Scarlett Johansson might reprise her role as Black Widow. It appears Jeremy Renner is the only original Avenger unsure about his future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This highlights a troubling reality: the MCU isn’t giving Hawkeye’s character the attention he deserves.
The MCU Is Failing the Original Hawkeye
Hawkeye has always been one of the Avengers’ less powerful members, but he consistently proves his worth, even against incredibly strong enemies like the Chitauri or Ultron’s robots. What truly makes him popular, though, is his deep love for his family. However, as the Marvel Cinematic Universe has expanded, Hawkeye has been sidelined in favor of more powerful heroes. He was notably absent from Avengers: Infinity War, becoming the only original Avenger to miss the first battle against Thanos. Now, Avengers: Doomsday appears to be repeating that mistake by leaving him out again. This is particularly disappointing considering he’s one of just three original Avengers still fighting. Hawkeye deserves to stand with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, especially his longtime teammates Thor and Hulk.
Recent developments regarding Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been disheartening for fans. Jeremy Renner recently shared that he was offered significantly less pay for a potential second season of Hawkeye than he earned for the first, leading him to decline the offer. This suggests Marvel Studios may not be prioritizing Hawkeye’s storyline or Clint Barton’s character, potentially paving the way for Kate Bishop to fully take over the Hawkeye mantle. While Clint deserves a fitting conclusion to his story and respectful treatment, it seems a second season might not happen. Regardless, the MCU shouldn’t simply ignore Clint Barton, especially during major crossover events like the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. He should absolutely be included, even if it marks his final appearance as the character.
What Is Hawkeye’s Future in the MCU?
As a big MCU fan, I’ve always thought Hawkeye deserved more, and it sounds like there’s still a chance for him! It’s pretty surprising considering Jeremy Renner initially turned down Marvel’s first pitch for his return. But since he went public with that, it seems like they’ve been talking again, and he’s actually sounding more optimistic now. He’s even hinted at what a potential second season of Hawkeye could be about! Apparently, it might be a smaller, action-packed story – think The Raid – focusing on a showdown between Clint and his brother, Barney. Of course, we’d definitely see Kate Bishop back too, played by Hailee Steinfeld. Her future seems a bit more connected to the bigger Young Avengers plans, but I’m really hoping we get more Hawkeye!
Clint Barton, also known as Hawkeye, could take on a mentoring role within the team. Comic book versions of the group often feature a veteran hero guiding newer, less experienced members – usually Vision, but Hawkeye would be a great fit. This would allow Clint to retire from active hero work, letting a new generation save the day, while still offering his wisdom when needed.
Marvel has a lot of exciting possibilities for Hawkeye’s future. While it’s disappointing that Jeremy Renner likely won’t be in next year’s Avengers: Doomsday, that doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last of his character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Hawkeye deserves to remain a key player, whether through another season of his Disney+ show or as part of a Young Avengers team.
Avengers: Doomsday opens in theaters on December 18, 2026.
