The third installment in the Now You See Me series, titled Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, is finally being released after years of anticipation. With nine years having passed since Jesse Eisenberg last played J. Daniel Atlas and twelve years since Isla Fisher portrayed Henley Reeves, I was curious if slipping back into their roles felt natural. It turns out, learning new skills proved challenging, and while Jesse Eisenberg explained this to me, his co-star playfully teased and praised him.
Before the release of Now You See Me: Now You Don’t in 2025, I spoke with Jesse Eisenberg and Isla Fisher about revisiting their characters after a long break. I asked Eisenberg, known for A Real Pain, how difficult it was to relearn the magic tricks, wondering if it came back easily. Here’s what he said:
It’s amazing how much I remembered from the first time – my muscle memory was still sharp, like it had been ten years ago. But anything new felt like starting from scratch. It’s really odd how those two experiences felt so different.
It was surprising how easily Jesse Eisenberg remembered the old magic tricks, given how much time had passed. But learning new illusions for the third movie proved much harder. He explained to me just how challenging they were.
I can do certain tricks automatically because I’ve practiced them so much. But even tricks that seem similar, like a diamond reveal – where I bring something up to show it off – feel completely new to learn. It’s surprisingly difficult.
The trailer for Now You See Me: Now You Don’t shows off a lot of impressive illusions. Jesse Eisenberg, who plays J. Daniel Atlas, recently talked about how challenging learning magic actually is, even for those who perform it professionally, explaining that:
Mastering magic tricks takes incredible dedication – even professional magicians practice the same moves daily in front of a mirror. Without that constant practice, the performance won’t be convincing. That’s why we were constantly rehearsing during filming. Whenever we weren’t shooting a scene, we were working with our magic instructors to perfect our skills.
It’s true that practice makes perfect, and this movie really achieved something amazing. While talking to Eisenberg about it, Isla Fisher playfully interrupted to tease him – he was simultaneously working on another film while they were making the third Now You See Me movie, and she pointed that out.
You were busy with the movie’s promotion and traveling for the Oscars, while he was supposedly dedicating himself to learning magic.
While Fisher was speaking, Eisenberg mentioned this actually motivated him to practice his magic even more. It makes sense, considering he was juggling filming Now You See Me: Now You Don’t with other commitments, that he’d need extra time to rehearse. So, during his travels for award shows celebrating A Real Pain, he was likely also continuing to hone his magic skills.
Considering everything, it’s amusing to imagine Jesse Eisenberg, known from The Social Network, honing his magic skills while promoting the film. This campaign could ultimately lead to A Real Pain receiving an Oscar nomination in 2025 for Eisenberg’s screenplay and a Best Actor win for Kieran Culkin.
Ultimately, the actress from Henley was both playfully teasing and genuinely praising her co-star. And, truthfully, given the franchise’s fun, often sarcastic, but impressively magical atmosphere, this dynamic feels completely right for Now You See Me.
Find out if all the effort was worth it when the thrilling new movie, Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, arrives in theaters on November 14th.
