The popular horror series IT has returned, now as a television show with IT: Welcome to Derry. The first episode immediately immerses viewers in the terrifying world of the supernatural threat.
During an interview with ScreenRant, the co-showrunners of IT: Welcome to Derry, Jason Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane, revealed they’re hoping to continue the series beyond the first season. Fuchs stated, “We’re planning for more, but HBO hasn’t officially confirmed a second season yet.”
According to Fuchs, the story’s supernatural entity, ‘IT’, seems to hibernate and reemerge every 27 years. While the recent story arc focused on this cycle, they’re aware of other unsettling events happening in Derry decades prior. The HBO series aims to build on and expand this established mythology.
Fuchs explained that they have some idea of what happened in the previous technological era, drawing from details about Mike Hanlon in the original story. He added that they would be happy to explore that further if audiences are interested.
Caleb Kane explained that the prequel series will include scenes inspired by parts of Stephen King’s novel that weren’t previously adapted. He noted that the show will explore the cyclical nature of Pennywise’s appearances, revisiting the horror he brings to the town of Derry every 27 years.
The writer points out the series’ timeline offers rich storytelling possibilities. They explain that traveling back to 1962, 27 years before the events of 1989, allows them to explore America during a turbulent time. Given the villain’s reliance on fear and division, 1962 provides a particularly compelling backdrop for a story about the anxieties and conflicts of that era.
Caleb Kane says the story explores those historical elements, particularly the backdrop of the Great Depression and the era of bank robbers and gangsters, specifically referencing the Bradley gang. They wanted to incorporate that period into the narrative, going back 27 years in time.
The co-showrunner explained that they aimed to incorporate many of the brief scenes from the original book. Specifically, they wanted to recreate the flashbacks to 1908, bringing those moments to life as the author intended.

The new series, IT: Welcome to Derry, has eight episodes, and Andy Muschietti directed some of them. Bill Skarsgård, who famously played the villain in the IT movies, will return as Pennywise later in the season.
The second episode of IT: Welcome to Derry, will be available on HBO Max early – starting Friday, October 31st. It will also air on HBO as usual this Sunday, November 2nd, at 9 PM.
