A free update is coming to Animal Crossing: New Horizons with lots of new things to do! One exciting addition lets you play classic Nintendo games—a feature not seen since the very first Animal Crossing—using special retro consoles you can get in the game. You’ll need a Nintendo Switch Online membership to use this feature.
The new version 3.0 update adds a resort hotel managed by Kapp’n and his family. If you assist them with running the hotel, their gift shop will sell classic Nintendo items like the Game Boy, NES, and SNES consoles.
You’ll be able to set up these consoles around your house and enjoy a different classic game on each one. The trailer featured Ice Climber on the NES, but it’s currently unknown whether each console will offer more than one game, or exactly which titles will be included.
As a Nintendo Switch Online member, I can already enjoy classics like Ice Climber through the Nintendo Classics app, so finding them in Animal Crossing: New Horizons feels more like a fun little bonus than a completely new way to play.
Man, I loved the first Animal Crossing on GameCube! It had this awesome feature where you could unlock and play 19 classic NES games. I remember being so hyped to find Ice Climber, but there were tons of other great ones too, like Balloon Fight, Donkey Kong, and Punch-Out. It’s a shame they took that out of the later games. I guess they figured, why include it when you could just buy all those games separately on the Virtual Console?
The New Horizons update, releasing alongside the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition on January 15, 2026, will bring a lot of exciting new content, including classic gaming consoles, Lego furniture, and items inspired by The Legend of Zelda and Splatoon.
