A recent scientific study has determined the scariest movie ever made, and now you can watch the 2012 thriller for free.

2025 proved to be a great year for horror movies. “Sinners” kicked off the summer with some serious scares, followed by big hits like “28 Years Later” and “Weapons.” Most recently, “The Conjuring: Last Rites” has earned close to half a billion dollars around the world.

According to the Science of Scare project, Sinister is the most frightening movie ever.

Director by Black Phone helmer Scott Derrickson – from a script he wrote with Black Phone collaborator C. Robert Cargill – Sinister stars Ethan Hawke as a true crime writer, with the official synopsis as follows:

Ellison Oswald, a writer who hasn’t had a successful book in over a decade, is starting to panic. When he stumbles upon a disturbing snuff film depicting a family’s murder, he decides to investigate. In a risky move, he moves his own family into the house where the crime occurred, hoping to solve the mystery. But as he uncovers old film reels and other evidence, he begins to suspect a supernatural presence, and realizes living in the house could be deadly.

Released in 2012, the film was a huge financial success, earning almost $90 million despite costing only $3 million to make. It was so popular that a sequel was released in 2015.

However, the original film ranked highest on the Science of Scare list. This list is created by monitoring the heart rates and heart rate variability of 250 volunteers to determine a ‘scare score.’ Using this method, Sinister received a score of 96 out of 100, narrowly beating Host (95/100), Skinamarink (91/100), Insidious (90/100), and The Conjuring (88/100).
