The Hello Kitty movie, a project from Warner Bros. Animation and New Line Cinema, has been in the works for a long time. Now, fans finally know when they can expect to see the popular Sanrio character on the big screen.
Warner Bros. announced on Instagram that a Hello Kitty movie is scheduled to be released on July 21, 2028. The announcement included a short video of Hello Kitty pointing to the Warner Bros. logo, with her signature red bow featured prominently. The post’s caption read, “Hello Hollywood #HelloKittyMovie is coming to theaters July 21, 2028!”
I remember hearing whispers way back in 2015 about a Hello Kitty movie! It finally became official a few years later in 2019 when New Line and Flynn Picture Company announced they were making it happen. What’s really cool is this is the first time Sanrio has teamed up with a major studio for a Hello Kitty feature film – and they’re including all our favorites like My Melody, Gudetama, and the Little Twin Stars too!
Leo Matsuda, a story artist known for his work on animated hits like Zootopia and Wreck-It Ralph, will direct the project. The script comes from Dana Fox, who was a writer and executive producer for Wicked.
Shintaro Tsuji, the founder of Sanrio, was thrilled about the new movie deal. He shared in a statement that he’s excited to see Hello Kitty and other Sanrio characters appear in a Hollywood film, hoping it will spread the message of friendship that Hello Kitty has always represented to an even wider audience.
Hello Kitty, originally named Kitty White, was created in 1974 by Yuko Shimizu. She’s a British cat who lives with her family in the London suburbs, and has a twin sister named Mimmy – the only difference between them is that Mimmy wears a yellow bow instead of Kitty’s signature red one. Hello Kitty quickly became incredibly popular, leading to numerous animated series, books, video games, and a wide range of products enjoyed by fans of all ages.
The Hello Kitty Movie will be released on July 21, 2028.
