For a Halloween treat, a new episode of South Park will air this week featuring a storyline where Trump destroys part of the White House. This is the second episode of the show’s 28th season, following a very short 27th season that only had five episodes. Promos show Satan assisting the president with renovations, which accidentally releases a chaotic force. Back in South Park, Colorado, Stan is concerned the town (and possibly the show itself?) has become overly focused on politics.
Kyle and Stan often seem to voice the opinions of the creators of South Park, so Stan’s concerns likely reflect what Matt and Trey are thinking. While this approach might be creatively challenging for them, it’s been very good for the show’s popularity. South Park’s increasingly political storylines have boosted ratings – the season 27 premiere, which focused on Donald Trump, was the most-watched episode in 25 years. The show even satirized Charlie Kirk shortly before his death, which he reportedly appreciated. The first episode after his death primarily focused on sports betting, but also included criticism of Benjamin Netanyahu. That’s three controversial political topics in a row.
