Buffy the Vampire Slayer featured many frightening villains, but one is particularly terrifying. Throughout the show’s seven seasons, Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) battled countless scary creatures – it was, after all, her responsibility.

Let me tell you, not all horror villains are created equal. Some are genuinely terrifying, while others… well, a couple of teens channeling a hyena god felt more silly than scary. But then, in season two, this thing shows up – honestly, it’s the kind of monster that would give even Buffy Summers pause. It’s seriously unsettling, and I mean really scary.

In the second season episode “Killed by Death”, Buffy gets sick with the flu and ends up in the hospital. While there, she notices a scary man with scars and sharp teeth stalking the children’s ward. Buffy and her friends soon discover this creature is a being known as “Der Kindestod,” which translates to “child death.”

Buffy discovers the monster preys on sick children, draining their life force and ultimately killing them. It seems only children who are very ill can actually see the creature. This realization brings back a painful memory for Buffy: her young cousin Celia (Denise Johnson) died in the hospital, desperately pleading for something invisible to leave her alone.

The imagery is already disturbing, but the episode concludes with a truly terrifying scene showing the fate of those claimed by the Kindestod. The monster restrains Buffy, and each of its eyes opens to reveal worm-like tendrils that crawl onto her forehead and drain her life force.

I still get chills thinking about that image – it’s truly horrifying, and the fact that those kids saw it right before… well, it’s deeply upsetting. Honestly, the makeup and costumes on Buffy are consistently amazing, but what they did with ‘Der Kindestod’ was on another level – it felt like something ripped straight from a nightmare. It was genuinely terrifying and unforgettable.

It Was A Bad Idea To introduce Buffy’s Cousin In This Episode

Looking back, one part of the “Killed by Death” episode feels a little strange. Introducing Buffy’s cousin, Celia, who died in the hospital and seemingly gave Buffy a lasting fear of hospitals, feels like an unnecessary addition. She’s never mentioned before, and she’s never mentioned again.

Buffy’s childhood fear of hospitals doesn’t really contribute to the story and feels like an afterthought, added to try and create an emotional connection. The episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer already had plenty of emotional weight with the fear of children dying, so this felt unnecessary.
