Following Krafton’s decision to prioritize artificial intelligence, the developers of Subnautica 2, Unknown Worlds Entertainment, have stated they are not using AI-generated content in their game. This confirms they are going against their publisher’s direction on the matter.
On the game’s Discord server, community manager Donya Abramo clarified how the publisher and developer work together. She explained that Krafton Inc. supplies the resources, but Unknown Worlds Entertainment decides which ones to actually use in development. GenAI is one of those resources the team has chosen not to use.
According to Abramo, generative AI isn’t being used to create Subnautica 2. However, the game does feature an AI system for controlling creature behavior, which is a common element in their games.
Abramo directed players to a developer video from September 16th that explained how the game’s creatures behave. According to Antonio Muñoz Gallego, the lead AI engineer, Subnautica 2 uses traditional AI techniques to make creatures respond more realistically to players and the surrounding environment. Essentially, the game’s AI is carefully designed by the developers, not automatically generated by code.
According to Abramo, players don’t need to worry about generative AI being used in Subnautica 2. The development team already has a well-defined process in place, so they won’t be incorporating it.
Honestly, I don’t see things changing much on our end. We’ve already got our teams, workflows, and everything set up the way we need it. But our relationship with Krafton is still solid. They give us access to a bunch of cool tools and resources, and we just pick what works best for the games we’re making.
As a big fan of games like PUBG and Subnautica, I was surprised to hear that Krafton – the company behind those, plus the upcoming Hi-Fi Rush 2 – is investing a huge $70 million in generative AI. They’re clearly hoping to be a major player with this technology in gaming, which is a bit controversial, honestly. And it’s not all good news – it sounds like Subnautica 2 is facing some trouble, with the people who used to lead the development team actually suing Krafton from back in September.
Subnautica 2, which was initially planned to come out in 2025 for PC and Xbox Series X|S, will now be released sometime in 2026.
