So, I loved The Outer Worlds when it came out in 2019, and I’m super hyped for the sequel! That first game was all about making choices and seeing how they impacted the story, with a bunch of different endings. I’ve been wondering, though – which of those endings are considered ‘canon’ now, and will any of my old choices actually matter in The Outer Worlds 2? Basically, do I need to have played the first game to understand what’s going on in the new one? This guide breaks it all down.
Do you need to know The Outer Worlds?

Obsidian Studio addressed the challenge of carrying over player choices from the first game by setting The Outer Worlds 2 in a new star system called Utopia. This sequel takes place hundreds of light-years away and features a completely separate story. While both games exist within the same universe, their narratives won’t connect. You won’t meet familiar characters from the original game, and your past decisions won’t have an impact. The sequel will provide all the necessary information, so prior knowledge of the first game isn’t required.
While the two games aren’t directly connected, they do share a common thread: the corporations Spacer’s Choice and Auntie Cleo appear in both. Though you’ll meet different people working for them in each game, in The Outer Worlds 2, these two companies have combined to form a single entity called Auntie’s Choice. This new corporation will be a major faction you’ll encounter as you explore Utopia.
