Warning: Minor SPOILERS for Weapons to follow…
Zach Cregger’s newest film, Weapons, is now available just as the Halloween season wraps up. Though he previously directed films like Miss March (2009) and The Civil War on Drugs (2011), Cregger gained widespread recognition with his 2022 horror film, Barbarian. Building on that success, he returned to the genre with Weapons, which sparked a bidding war before landing at Warner Bros. Released in August, the film has received generally positive reviews and generated a lot of discussion about its themes and overall message.
Okay, so I just finished watching Weapons, and it’s a really interesting movie. The story isn’t told in a straight line, which I appreciated – it jumps around between different characters and time periods, and honestly, it keeps you guessing. It revolves around this small town where seventeen kids vanish overnight, and the film focuses on how different people are affected. The big question everyone was asking – what happened to the kids? – actually gets a really satisfying answer. And let me tell you, the character of Gladys is genuinely terrifying. She’s quickly become a new horror legend, and I’ve heard the studio is even thinking about making a whole movie just about her backstory!
Zach Cregger’s film Weapons is a standout horror movie, especially perfect for watching this fall. Its dreamlike and unsettling visuals—like the floating gun—and deliberately unclear meaning make it a film you can revisit again and again, trying to unravel its secrets. While Cregger suggests the movie is more about his personal experience with grief than a fixed puzzle to solve, that doesn’t make it any less captivating. Whether you’re already a fan or discovering it for the first time on HBO Max, Weapons is sure to keep you guessing until the very end.
‘Weapons’ is Already Dominating the Streaming Charts

Warner Bros. Pictures
Let me tell you, Weapons is the movie everyone’s talking about right now. As of today, it’s sitting pretty at number one on HBO Max’s “Top 10 Movies” chart – and that’s saying something, considering it’s beating out other popular horror films that are naturally doing well this time of year. Bring Her Back from A24 is right behind it at number two, followed by MUBI’s The Substance at three. But here’s the kicker: with a whopping 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on over 370 reviews, Weapons isn’t just popular, it’s genuinely good. Seriously, don’t sleep on this one.
Following the release of his film Weapons on HBO Max, director Johannes Roberts is already moving on to his next project: Resident Evil. The movie, based on the popular Capcom video game series, will star Austin Abrams. Roberts has shared that while the film is set in the Resident Evil universe, it will tell a completely new story, rather than adapting any specific game’s plot.
