Pokemon TCG collector devastated after sewage flood destroys thousands in sealed cards

Man, I’m still reeling from this. A fellow collector just got completely wrecked by a sewage flood – his whole Pokemon card collection, sealed boxes and everything, is ruined! We’re talking thousands of dollars gone, just like that. It’s a total nightmare scenario for anyone who collects, honestly.

A Reddit user named Substantial-Pie-4973 shared a sad story on the r/PokemonTCG subreddit, posting photos of damage caused by a flood. He explained that the flooding happened in his grandmother’s basement, where he and his wife were keeping their things temporarily while looking for a new house.

The collector said a sewer pipe broke and flooded his basement while he was gone. Everything was soaked for as long as three days before anyone noticed. This ruined a lot of his collection, including card binders, sealed Elite Trainer Boxes, and booster boxes – most of which had to be discarded.

He explained that Category 3 water damage is very dangerous, and absorbent items like trading cards can’t be restored. His insurance company only covered the cost of the cardboard itself because he hadn’t specifically insured his collection, similar to how you’d insure valuable jewelry.

A Reddit user shared that they began rebuilding their collectible card collection after college in 2019, eventually amassing a significant display of sealed products. Unfortunately, photos show the collection – dozens of boxes and binders – was completely ruined by water damage, becoming warped and unusable.

Although the collector lost money, they were most upset about the sentimental value of the cards – years of collecting memories disappeared in an instant. The story quickly spread through the Pokémon trading card game community, and many fans expressed sympathy, encouraging others to check their insurance and how they store their collections.
