Albania’s Prime Minister Edi Rama revealed that Diella, the country’s AI minister, has ‘given birth’ to 83 digital ‘children.’ This unusual development marks the latest phase in what’s believed to be the world’s first trial of an AI official in government.
During a speech, Rama announced that Albania’s Socialist Party will be using 83 AI assistants, which he playfully referred to as “children.” These AI tools will monitor parliamentary proceedings, provide summaries of debates, and offer advice to lawmakers on how to engage in discussions.
Rama explained that each of these helpers would act as an assistant. He said that if someone went for coffee and didn’t return, the assistant could report on what happened while they were away and even suggest who needed to be addressed.
AI government official ‘pregnant’
Diella, meaning “Sun,” became Albania’s AI minister in September with a mission to make government spending open and honest. This digital minister actually started as a virtual assistant in January, helping people and businesses use government services online through the e-Albania platform.
This news follows a recent bill introduced in Ohio that would prohibit AI from marrying people or being granted legal rights, highlighting how quickly discussions about artificial intelligence are changing worldwide. While Albania is exploring the possibility of AI leading government departments and even creating new digital assistants, other countries are working to firmly limit any recognition of AI as a legal person.
Albania’s Prime Minister believes that Diella, an AI program, will be significantly involved in parliamentary work by the end of 2026. This could be one of the most unusual technology projects ever undertaken by a government.
