Answer to “The undead reanimated” in Cookie Jam
Horror is my specialty, so this was pretty straightforward. I naturally think in terms of spooky scenarios – you could say I’m an expert in all things eerie. Let’s get right to it:
- The undead reanimated – Zombies
The concept of zombies originated in Haitian folklore, where the term “zombi” described a reanimated corpse brought back to life through magic or spiritual practices, often connected to Vodou. These beliefs predate the zombies we see in today’s films and books.
William Seabrook’s 1929 book, The Magical Island, was one of the first times Western audiences learned about Haitian Vodou, including the idea of zombies. This led to the 1932 film White Zombie, often considered the very first full-length zombie movie. However, the zombies in this early film were different from the flesh-eating creatures we see now – they were portrayed as people who were hypnotized and controlled by others.
The modern idea of zombies really took shape with George A. Romero’s 1968 film, Night of the Living Dead. This movie changed how we think about zombies, establishing the characteristics we see in most zombie stories today, and essentially created the template for the genre.
