Eddie Murphy realized that people saw him as the worst actor in history and decided to take a break, which lasted longer than he had expected

Eddie Murphy is a celebrated comedian and actor who has brought laughter to audiences for decades. He’s famous for movies like Beverly Hills Cop, Coming to America, and The Nutty Professor. While he was a huge comedy star in the 1990s, he started making less successful movie choices in the 2000s.

Eddie Murphy’s career began to struggle in 2002 with the poorly received film The Adventures of Pluto Nash. This downturn continued with movies like Norbit and Meet Dave. The low point came at the 2010 Razzie Awards, where he received a special ‘Worst Actor of the Decade’ award, which made him realize he needed to change course. This led him to decide to take a break from acting.

I was making really bad movies, and honestly, it wasn’t enjoyable anymore. I even started receiving Razzie Awards… they actually gave me the worst actor Razzie! That’s when I realized it was probably time to step back for a while.

Eddie Murphy took a break from acting for several years, appearing only in the film Mr. Church between 2013 and 2019. He returned to the big screen in 2019 with the successful Dolemite Is My Name, marking a significant comeback.

I initially intended to take just a year off, but six years quickly passed. I found myself able to spend all day on the couch, but I didn’t want my final projects to be low-quality. I had hoped to film ‘Dolemite,’ appear on ‘Saturday Night Live,’ make ‘Coming 2 America,’ and then return to stand-up to gauge how I was feeling. At the very least, I wanted people to remember me as someone who was still funny.

He previously won a Razzie Award, but this time received their Redemption Award, celebrating his successful return to acting. Additionally, his role in Dolemite Is My Name earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical.

Eddie Murphy’s career experienced a resurgence with the success of Dolemite Is My Name, marking a turning point for him.
