Eddie Murphy took a break from acting for several years, appearing only in the film Mr. Church between 2013 and 2019. He returned to the big screen in 2019 with the successful Dolemite Is My Name, marking a significant comeback.
I initially intended to take just a year off, but six years quickly passed. I found myself able to spend all day on the couch, but I didn’t want my final projects to be low-quality. I had hoped to film ‘Dolemite,’ appear on ‘Saturday Night Live,’ make ‘Coming 2 America,’ and then return to stand-up to gauge how I was feeling. At the very least, I wanted people to remember me as someone who was still funny.
He previously won a Razzie Award, but this time received their Redemption Award, celebrating his successful return to acting. Additionally, his role in Dolemite Is My Name earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical.
