Forget cheap thrills – unsettling horror that explores the anxieties of adolescence is really popular right now. Jane Schoenbrun, the creator of I Saw the TV Glow, is adapting Charles Burns’s graphic novel Black Hole into a Netflix series. Schoenbrun will write and direct the show, excitedly announcing it on social media as a dream project. Black Hole is a perfect fit for Schoenbrun, as it shares similar themes with their acclaimed 2024 film. The story takes place in a town where teenagers who become sexually active contract a disease that transforms them into mutants. It follows Chris, a popular girl who gets infected, and Keith, a young man who loves her. After contracting the virus, Chris joins a group of mutants living in the woods, only to discover someone is hunting them down.
Originally published as a 12-part series between 1995 and 2005, the story has now been collected into a single book. Several film adaptations were planned in the past, with directors like David Fincher, Alexandre Aja, and Rick Famuyiwa attached, but none came to fruition. Hopefully, this attempt will finally succeed. Prepare to be captivated!
