I’m so excited that Materialists finally has a streaming date! It’s the new film from Celine Song, who blew everyone away with Past Lives. This one stars Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal, and it’s a really interesting modern romance. It centers around Lucy, played by Johnson, who’s a matchmaker but finds herself caught between two very different men: a rich guy named Harry, played by Pascal, and her ex, John, who’s more of a working-class type – Chris Evans nails that role. Honestly, Materialists was the movie everyone was talking about this year, and I can’t wait to see it!
The movie Materialists will start streaming on HBO Max on November 7, 2025, and will air on HBO channels beginning November 8th at 8 PM Eastern Time. It first played in theaters on June 13, 2025, meaning it had a five-month run in cinemas before becoming available for streaming. Viewers could also rent or buy the film digitally starting July 22, 2025.
‘Materialist’ Was One of Summer 2025’s Surprise Hits
A24
The film Materialists was a surprisingly successful movie this summer. It earned $11 million in its opening weekend, placing third behind the summer’s biggest hit, How to Train Your Dragon, and Lilo & Stitch. Ultimately, Materialists grossed $36.5 million in the US and $65.9 million internationally, totaling $102.4 million worldwide. This makes it the third-highest-grossing film ever released by A24, following Everything Everywhere All At Once and Civil War.
Critics generally responded well to Materialists, giving it a 78% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 70 on Metacritic. Audiences gave it a B- on CinemaScore, and some believe this was because the film was marketed as a lighthearted romantic comedy, but turned out to be a more serious romantic drama. Will Sayre of MovieWeb praised the film, calling it “another triumph for Celine Song.”
Just after HBO Max raised its prices on October 21, 2025, the streaming service announced it will be the first to stream the new film Materialists. HBO Max has become popular with movie fans because it’s the first place to offer many films from A24, a deal struck in December 2023. While Materialists isn’t a typical holiday movie, its release in November offers a chance to see one of the year’s best films before the end of 2025.
