Fall is the perfect time for spooky movies, but it can be tricky finding ones the whole family can enjoy. I love sharing movies with my daughter, and I definitely want to avoid anything too frightening! Luckily, I remembered a really unique animated series called Over the Garden Wall from 2014, and thought it would be a great option.

My daughter and I absolutely loved this show – we watched all ten episodes over the weekend! I plan on making it a yearly tradition with her. It’s exactly the cozy fall series I’ve been hoping for, and I highly recommend it to any family looking for something new to watch this season.

What Is Over The Garden Wall About?

Over The Garden Wall is a limited series created by Patrick McHale, known for his work on popular Cartoon Network shows like The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack and Adventure Time. Originally designed for the Halloween season, the story was expanded from a highly-regarded short film he previously made called Tome of the Unknown.

The story follows brothers Wirt and Greg as they get lost in the woods and try to find their way back home. Along the way, they meet all sorts of unusual characters – skeletons dressed as pumpkins, talking animals, and even demons! Will they be able to overcome these challenges and escape The Beast? Parents should be aware that the story becomes more complex as it goes on, but it’s best to let families discover those details on their own.

Over The Garden Wall Is Loaded With Celebrity Voices

Despite being less than two hours long, this Cartoon Network miniseries attracted some impressive voice actors. Elijah Wood, well-known at the time, voiced the character Wirt, and Christopher Lloyd lent his voice to the recurring role of The Woodsman. The show also featured Samuel Ramey, a celebrated opera singer with a long and successful career before working on Over The Garden Wall.

You’ll hear John Cleese, Tim Curry, and even a young Jenna Ortega – before she became famous for Wednesday – among others. The series would have been good even without such a talented cast, but it’s definitely a bonus to recognize so many familiar voices.

The Episodes Are Rich With Symbolism, But Light Enough For Kids To Enjoy

When the brothers reached Pottsfield in Over The Garden Wall and were told they weren’t ready to join, I suspected the series had deeper layers than what was immediately apparent. My daughter, though, was completely engrossed and genuinely shocked by how the story ultimately unfolded.

Just a heads-up: this paragraph reveals key plot points! This story centers around two brothers who are unknowingly battling for survival after a terrible accident. While the premise isn’t entirely realistic—the idea of brothers sharing the same long dream while in comas is far-fetched—the reveal towards the end of the series was incredibly mind-blowing and turned it into a yearly rewatch for me.

It’s Just Spooky Enough For The Entire Family To Enjoy

My daughter is going through a phase where she’s really into spooky things and wants to watch scary content, like Five Nights at Freddy’s, even though it’s much too mature for her age. She insists that something needs to be frightening for her to enjoy it, and she considers anything less to be for little kids.

As a parent who also loves animation, I’m always walking a tightrope trying to find shows that are engaging without being too frightening for my daughter. I learned with Over The Garden Wall that it struck a really nice balance. It definitely had those creepy, atmospheric moments that felt a little more mature, letting her know it wasn’t just a typical kids’ show, but it always mixed in enough humor and lightness to prevent her from getting genuinely scared or losing sleep over it. It was perfect for introducing her to slightly spookier content without overwhelming her.

If you’re hoping to watch Over The Garden Wall this fall, you’re in luck! It’s currently streaming with a Hulu subscription. I was hoping to find it on HBO Max, since they have many other Cartoon Network shows, but it’s great that it’s available on Hulu at least.

If you’re tired of the same old Halloween shows, I highly recommend checking out Over the Garden Wall. It’s a really enjoyable show, and I think it has the potential to become a timeless classic if it continues to gain popularity. Especially with how much Millennials love Halloween, we could use more great specials like this one – and I say that as a Millennial who’s happily passing on that love to my own child!
