Though the film isn’t due out for a couple of years, Mason Thames is already preparing to star in How to Train Your Dragon 2. He’s taking on the lead role of Hiccup in the 2025 live-action adaptation, portraying the clumsy young hero as he meets and befriends Toothless, a unique and powerful dragon called a Night Fury. Their bond will transform Hiccup’s Viking village, replacing fear of dragons with acceptance.
Dean DeBlois, who directed the original How to Train Your Dragon films, returned to direct the first installment, which was a big hit, earning over $635 million globally. It became the most successful film in the How to Train Your Dragon series and received a 77% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Universal Pictures announced at CinemaCon in April 2025 that a sequel, How to Train Your Dragon 2, is planned for release in June 2027.
During a recent conversation with ScreenRant about his film Regretting You, actor Jude Thames discussed the upcoming live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2. He jokingly warned he could get in trouble for revealing too much, but shared that he’s seen some impressive early concepts and is excited to be involved in adapting what he considers his favorite film from the How to Train Your Dragon series. You can find his exact words below.
I’m trying to be careful about what I say, so I won’t reveal too much. Honestly, I’m keeping things pretty quiet. But I’m incredibly excited about the second movie – it’s actually my favorite of the three! We’ve been discussing things with a lot of talented people, and the ideas I’ve seen are fantastic. I can’t wait to share more when I can!
According to what Thames has said, production on How to Train Your Dragon 2 hasn’t started yet, which isn’t surprising considering how the first movie was made. The first film’s production was delayed by the SAG-AFTRA strikes, then took a year and a half to get going, with four months of filming followed by a lengthy post-production process to finish all the computer-generated imagery.
With the next film not scheduled for release until June 11, 2027, it looks like the studio and filmmakers are planning a similar production schedule to previous projects. Ethan Thames has been very active recently, appearing in The Black Phone 2, the Green Day movie New Year’s Rev, and the adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s Regretting You. He’s also committed to star in Macon Blair’s upcoming dark comedy, alongside Dave Franco.
Thames’ enthusiasm suggests the upcoming installment of How to Train Your Dragon 2 will be another thrilling ride. He hinted at “a lot of cool people coming in,” which likely refers to the casting process. We know Cate Blanchett will reprise her role as Hiccup’s mother, and characters like the dragon trappers Drago and Eret (voiced by Djimon Hounsou and Kit Harington) will also return. Considering the recent live-action remake featured both new and familiar faces, it will be interesting to see if even more actors from previous films make an appearance.
