Darkseid’s DCU Debut Gets Unsurprising Answer

Fans of the DC Universe are wondering when Darkseid will appear, and according to James Gunn, it might be a while. Gunn recently shared that while Darkseid – DC’s version of Marvel’s Thanos – is planned for the DCU, his major on-screen introduction isn’t happening in the near future.

James Gunn thinks using Darkseid as the DCU’s ‘big bad right now’ may not work

James Gunn recently told Erik Voss of New Rockstars that the “Salvation” storyline from the Peacemaker season finale won’t be a strict adaptation of the comics. He advised viewers not to expect a close resemblance.

In DC’s Salvation Run comics, DeSaad, Darkseid’s top lieutenant, uses the planet Salvation as a place to train his parademon army. When DC introduced Planet Salvation, some fans speculated that the powerful New God might appear in future stories. However, James Gunn clarified that he’s simply using the idea of Salvation for his own purposes, and a full introduction of the New God isn’t planned.

James Gunn appreciated the concept of supervillains creating their own society in another dimension, as depicted in ‘Salvation.’ He felt it presented a realistic approach to handling escaped meta-humans, something a frustrated government might actually consider, with Amanda Waller and Rick Flag Jr. leading the effort.

During the interview, Gunn discussed why he’s hesitant to immediately use Darkseid as the main villain in the DC Universe. He pointed to two key concerns: Darkseid shares visual similarities with Thanos, a Marvel villain, and Zack Snyder already presented a compelling version of the character. Gunn felt introducing Darkseid as the primary antagonist right away wouldn’t be the best approach for these reasons.

It’s still unknown when fans will finally get to see one of DC’s most famous villains on the big screen.
