Mortal Kombat 2 Release Date Moved Up, But Not By Much

The sequel to the Mortal Kombat movie is coming out a week earlier than planned. Warner Bros. and New Line have set the new release date for May 8, 2026, moving it up from its original date of May 15, 2026, as reported by Deadline.

Mortal Kombat 2‘s release date has moved up a week, now debuting on Mother’s Day weekend in the US. This means it will now open on the same day as the new film, Sheep Detectives, from Amazon MGM Studios.

Mortal Kombat 2’s release date has been moved up a little, but it’s still quite a ways off. Originally planned for October 24, 2025, the movie is now scheduled to come out in May 2026 after a delay of over seven months.

New Line and Warner Bros. saw a successful launch with the latest Final Destination film in May, which broke franchise records. According to Deadline, early screenings for Mortal Kombat 2 have been very positive, prompting the studios to move the release date to maximize its audience and potential earnings.

Director Simon McQuoid said the delay was due to the film being “a victim of our own success.”

The director told The Hollywood Reporter that the movie has been building excitement with every viewing. They believe they’ve made a huge summer hit and are excited about the future of the ‘Mortal Kombat’ franchise, with the sequel planned for next year. While fans will have to wait, the director promises it will be worth it and feel like a major event.

Karl Urban, known for his role in ‘The Boys,’ will star as Johnny Cage in the upcoming ‘Mortal Kombat 2’ movie. Joining him are Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, and Tati Gabrielle as Jade.

At New York Comic-Con this month, Warner Bros. announced that it had greenlit Mortal Kombat 3.
