A former Indian Air Force pilot recently pretended to die to find out which of his friends and family would attend his funeral, and the story is now getting a lot of attention online.
Mohan Lal, a 74-year-old man, recently faked his own death as part of a surprising experiment to find out how many people would grieve for him, generating significant media attention.
On October 13th, Lal’s loved ones and neighbors in Konchi village, Gaya district, came together to mourn and celebrate his life with a funeral procession.
He was wrapped in a white cloth and laid on a flower-decorated bamboo stretcher. Pallbearers carried him to a temple for his final ceremonies and cremation.
Despite the sad atmosphere filled with weeping and mournful music, Lal unexpectedly sat up on the stretcher, showing everyone he was alive and healthy.
The event has stunned the nation and is now gaining international attention, not because of reports that he miraculously came back to life, but because of the surprising truth about his initial condition – he wasn’t actually dead.

Lal said he performed the stunt to find out how many people would be upset if he were to pass away.
He explained that while people typically are carried after they die, he wanted to experience the outpouring of respect and love from others firsthand.
To finish the ceremony, people burned a symbolic representation of him at the temple and then celebrated with a meal together.

Even after a recent upsetting event, Lal is highly regarded in his community because he consistently uses his own money to improve the lives of others. For instance, he recently paid for a modern and well-equipped crematorium to be built in his village, after witnessing how difficult it was for people to perform last rites during the rainy season.
Since I retired, I’ve really thrown myself into helping others and doing social work. I plan to keep at it for as long as I’m able – it’s something I want to dedicate the rest of my life to.
