After increasing the price of Xbox consoles for customers earlier this year, Microsoft is now charging developers more for hardware. The price of the Xbox Development Kit (XDK) has reportedly increased from $1,500 to $2,000, a jump of 33%.
A Microsoft representative explained to The Verge that the change is due to overall economic conditions. They didn’t confirm the specific amount reported by the site, but reaffirmed their dedication to offering excellent resources and assistance for developers.
Microsoft recently raised the price of Xbox consoles, and the company pointed to broader economic issues as a reason. This price increase is likely due to the 30% tariffs imposed on goods imported from China by the US government under President Trump.
According to The Verge, the cost of XDKs is increasing in the US, Europe, and globally.
The XDK is more expensive than the standard Xbox Series X because it has 40GB of GDDR6 memory – significantly more than the consumer model’s 16GB – and a more powerful processor. It also includes features not available on retail consoles, such as three USB ports, debugging tools, and a front panel display.
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is now more expensive, increasing by 50% to $30 per month. Microsoft acknowledges that raising prices isn’t ideal, but CFO Amy Hood is pushing for higher profits across all parts of the company, including Xbox.
Microsoft will announce its latest financial results on October 29th, detailing its earnings for the previous quarter.
