Okay, so huge news for us Catan fans! Netflix is actually making a Catan show! They’ve teamed up with Asmodee and Catan Studio to develop both scripted dramas and reality-style shows based on the game. It’s awesome that Klaus Teuber’s sons, Guido and Benjamin, are going to be involved too – it’s cool they’re keeping the family legacy alive. I’m seriously excited to see how they bring Catan to life on screen!
Since its creation, Catan has been enjoyed by millions and has introduced many people to modern board games. Asmodee CEO Thomas Koegler expressed excitement about the game reaching a wider audience and the potential for the brand’s future. He also highlighted Catan’s success as proof that board games are now a mainstream and beloved form of entertainment, and he’s pleased that Asmodee will continue working with Netflix.
First known as The Settlers of Catan, this popular board game has sold over 45 million copies worldwide. In Catan, players become settlers and compete to build settlements and earn victory points. You do this by collecting resources and expanding your territory. The latest version, Catan: Sixth Edition, is readily available, and there are also several expansions to enhance the gameplay.
Over the past few years, we’ve seen more video game and tabletop game properties adapted into TV shows and movies. Streaming services like Netflix are actively seeking licenses to popular games, and they’ve already had success with shows like Castlevania, Arcane, Devil May Cry, and Exploding Kittens. They’re also currently working on a series based on Assassin’s Creed.
Amazon is also making big moves with popular shows like Fallout, and has several exciting projects in the works, including adaptations of God of War, Wolfenstein, Mass Effect, and Warhammer 40K.
