Recent data reveals Prime Video has surpassed 240 million subscribers globally, placing it second in the streaming market behind Netflix. However, starting today, October 20, 2025, many users are reporting they can no longer access content.

Downdetector is showing a sudden spike in reports of problems with Amazon Web Services (AWS). This disruption is affecting several services that rely on AWS, such as Prime Video.

I just saw a report that there are some issues happening in AWS’s US-East-1 region – that’s basically all their data centers in Northern Virginia. It’s a super important part of how Amazon Web Services runs, and when it goes down, things like Prime Video can be affected for everyone around the globe! According to Downdetector, the issues are affecting several services that rely on Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Starting around 3 a.m. Eastern Time on October 20th, people began reporting problems with Amazon, with almost 15,000 issues logged. At the same time, reports of problems with Prime Video jumped by nearly 2,500.

Error code 5004 explained

Currently, many Prime Video customers are reporting problems and sharing their frustration on social media. They’re encountering an error message with code 5004.

This error likely means you couldn’t sign in or your internet connection is unstable. Considering recent problems with AWS, it’s probably a connection issue. To fix this, please double-check your login information and make sure your internet is working properly.

The problem isn’t with your device or internet connection. It’s due to a larger outage affecting Amazon’s servers and, as a result, your device can’t connect to Prime Video to sign in or play videos.

Unfortunately, there’s no way to fix error 5004 on your end. Amazon is working on the problem, and it should be fixed automatically once they restore service to the servers experiencing issues.

Someone posted on Reddit about an issue they were having with streaming. They shared a screenshot of an error message and said they couldn’t get anything to play, even when trying different videos.

Many users are reporting that Amazon and its services, including Prime Video, are currently unavailable. One user on X/Twitter said they initially thought the issue was on their end, but it seems to be a widespread outage, while another confirmed they couldn’t access their Prime Video account.

When will Amazon get fixed?

Amazon reported around 2:27am Pacific Time that services were starting to recover, and they expect a full resolution later today. They’ve confirmed they are working to fix the issues causing the widespread outage.

We’re still processing a large number of requests and will share more details as soon as we can, the company said.

About thirty minutes ago, Amazon announced they found a likely cause for errors with their DynamoDB services in the US-EAST-1 region. Their investigation suggests the problem stems from difficulties resolving the address for the DynamoDB service in that region.

We’re taking several different approaches at the same time to speed up the recovery process. This problem is also impacting other AWS services in the US-East-1 Region.

I initially thought something was wrong with my connection, but it turns out Amazon and all of its services are currently unavailable. It’s really unusual!

Services that work across multiple regions, and depend on connections in the US-EAST-1 region – like changes to user access permissions and globally shared DynamoDB databases – might also be affected.

The issue appears to be with DNS resolution – the process computers use to convert website names into the numerical addresses servers need to connect.

This issue is impacting DynamoDB, a key database service from Amazon that powers many popular apps and websites.

If apps aren’t working for you right now, it’s likely due to the current outage. Please be patient and watch for updates.
