How to get the Master Ball in Pokemon Legends: Z-A
You can get the Master Ball from Mable, a researcher located in the Pokemon Research Center. You’ll visit the center as part of the main story, so it’s hard to miss – it’s in the southern part of the map.
Mable’s Research rank and Master Ball reward
Okay, so I just found out how to get the Master Ball in Pokémon Legends: Z-A! You unlock it when you hit Rank 49 in the Mable’s Research section. The cool thing is, you don’t even have to go back and talk to Mable every time! You can just open the menu and hit the X button to claim your rewards and get it as you rank up. It’s super convenient!
Mable’s Research requests and tallies
Getting the Master Ball in Pokemon Legends: Z-A by reaching level 49 is a significant challenge, requiring many hours of gameplay. You earn the points needed through completing requests and tallies. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect:
- You need to complete your Pokedex by catching unique species–i.e. one of each type. We’ve got you covered in our Pokedex/Pokemon locations guide.
- The above goes hand-in-hand with surveying Wild Zones–i.e. catching all the Pokemon in each habitat.
- The “Catching X-type” tallies grant points as you capture Pokemon that belong to a particular type/element. A good idea is to buy a lot of cheap Poke Balls so you can catch low-level critters like Pidgey (Normal/Flying) and Budews (Grass/Poison) to fulfill multiple tallies.
- You also have to unlock dozens of Mega Evolutions.
- Other objectives and actions, such as resting on benches, winning battles, and smashing Mega Crystals also help boost your rank.
- And, yes, you might want to find a buddy who wants to do a Link Trade for the extra points.
Which Pokemon requires the Master Ball just to get captured?
The Master Ball always catches a Pokémon, so it’s best used on those that are very difficult to capture – like Mewtwo in the original Pokémon games.
You don’t actually *need* Master Balls to catch Legendary Pokémon in this game – Ultra Balls work just fine, and you can easily retry the encounter if you fail. The best use for a Master Ball is probably for a Shiny Pokémon you really want to catch. But honestly, you can also just save it forever if you prefer – it’s completely your choice!
That wraps up our guide to getting the Master Ball in Pokemon Legends: Z-A. If you’re also looking for recommendations on which Pokemon to add to your team early in the game, be sure to check out our guide on the best early-game Pokemon!
