Even decades after it began, the manga *Berserk* is still considered the best example of dark fantasy. It’s been made into several anime series, and while none tell the complete story, each offers a different interpretation of the first major arc. One of the most popular adaptations is *Berserk: The Golden Age*, which originally debuted as three movies in 2012 and was later released as a 13-episode animated series. Now, the entire series is being re-released in a special two-disc steelbook Blu-ray set, available for $75 starting October 28th. You can pre-order it exclusively from the Crunchyroll online store.
Berserk: The Golden Age is the second anime adaptation of the popular manga’s Golden Age arc, following a previous series from 1997. This version aims to be a more accurate retelling of the story. It was originally released as a trilogy of films, then later compiled into a 13-episode anime series – and that’s what you’ll find on the Memorial Edition Blu-ray. While the story is closer to the manga, opinions varied on the animation style, which combines classic 2D with 3D computer graphics. Despite this, both the films and the original series were generally well-received, and this Blu-ray is a great way to enjoy one of the best story arcs in the fantasy genre.
If you’d rather not wait for the special Steelbook release, you can get the regular Blu-ray version of Berserk: The Golden Age – Memorial Edition on Amazon for $42.14. It has all the same movies and extras as the Steelbook, just in a standard case.
You can also find other Berserk anime series on Blu-ray, including the 2016 sequel that continues the story after the Golden Age Arc. Although the animation style in the 2016 series isn’t as popular due to its use of computer graphics, it’s still a good option if you prefer watching the story rather than reading the manga. The complete 2016 series Blu-ray set is currently on sale at Amazon for $41, down from $70.
If you’re interested in a different version of the Golden Age story, the 1997 Berserk anime is a fan favorite. You can find a Blu-ray box set for $36 (originally $60) on Amazon. Though it has some differences from the manga, it still captures the dark fantasy atmosphere perfectly, and the traditional hand-drawn animation still looks amazing after almost thirty years.
