Season 5 of the show has been a rollercoaster, with Mabel, Charles, and Oliver trying to solve the murders of Lester Coluca and Nicky Caccimelio. Between the involvement of the mob, wealthy billionaires, and even the Arconia’s new robot doorman, there’s been plenty of drama. One episode, “After You” (Episode 2), was particularly memorable. It showed Lester’s life when he first arrived at the Arconia, his connections with the other residents, and his role in the secret gambling den Nicky ran beneath the building. Like other episodes focusing on the victims, it was emotionally powerful. However, the episode’s use of flashbacks led to some confusion about how old certain characters were supposed to be. Some characters, like Lester, seemed to age significantly, while others, like Nicky, barely aged at all. At first, this seemed like a mistake, but some viewers now think it might be a deliberate clue.
Even though “After You” covered about 30 years, the show used young actors for flashbacks featuring Lester and Mabel. The other residents of the Arconia were played by the same actors throughout the episode, using wigs and visual effects to make them look younger. Most of these actors had clear changes to their appearance, especially their hair, but Nicky surprisingly didn’t seem to age much – he just had slightly grayer hair in later scenes. It’s easy to think this is an oversight, but Nicky isn’t the only character who doesn’t appear to age; Sebastian “Bash” Steed also maintains a remarkably consistent look.
Bash Steed Might Not Be the Only One Trying to Cheat Death
Fans of the show have noticed that Bash goes to great lengths to stay alive. While his exact age on *Only Murders in the Building* is unknown, he’s made several comments suggesting he’s quite old, including a claim about losing his virginity to Dorothy Parker, who lived from 1893 to 1967, and having multiple wives in assisted living. He also mentioned collagen baths, and a visit to his home revealed anti-aging masks and a mist-filled tank. Bash explained to Charles that his focus on longevity stems from a fear of death and a desire to be there for his son, Algernon. While it’s likely he exaggerates, his words suggest he’s been successfully delaying the aging process for a long time. It’s possible he’s even shared some of these methods with Nicky.
Bash doesn’t appear to have many close friends, but he seems to have a friendly connection with the other wealthy players in *Only Murders in the Building*. This bond might even include the owner of the gaming parlor where they all meet. We don’t know how long they’ve been playing at the Velvet Room, but Bash is likely the oldest and may have been a regular customer of Nicky’s for years, potentially becoming friends with him. If so, Bash might have willingly shared his anti-aging methods with Nicky, explaining why Nicky doesn’t seem to age. Or, Nicky could have secretly copied Bash’s techniques, angering him. This possible conflict could be the key to understanding Bash’s involvement in Nicky’s murder.
Nicky Caccimelio’s Body Holds Many Clues
The investigation into Nicky’s death, featured in episode “Rigor,” is revealing possible links to Bash. The team figured out from green felt under Nicky’s fingernails that he was killed in the Velvet Room, around the same time as Lester, according to a page found in Lester’s mouth. While Lester’s body was discovered in a fountain, Nicky’s showed signs of being frozen – specifically, freezer burn behind his ear. Someone then thawed him out a week later and displayed his body at his dry cleaner. A fan on Reddit, username zdboslaw, believes the person handling Nicky’s body might have used the equipment in Bash’s living room – which looks like a liquid nitrogen tank – to freeze him. It’s also important to remember that Mayor Tillman has stated the NYPD is under Bash’s influence, suggesting he could have paid the police to falsely report Nicky’s death as a mafia killing.
A key piece of evidence that hasn’t been fully explored is the white substance found on Nicky’s jacket. While the wealthy residents initially suspected drug use, Charles thought it smelled like paint, potentially linking it to Camila White, who is known for her decorating style—and her preference for neutral colors. Viewers saw her aesthetic in the episode “Dirty Birds.” Given that “Silver Alert” revealed Camila’s plan to secretly transform the Arconia into a casino, she might have already begun renovations elsewhere in the building. Nicky could have brushed against fresh paint that night and gotten it on his clothes. Since Camila was also present when Nicky died, it’s possible she and Bash collaborated to conceal his body.
Only Murders in the Building’s Billionaires Remain Suspicious
Despite all the clues, the podcast hosts haven’t been able to directly link any of the billionaires to Nicky or Lester’s deaths. While Bash, Camila, and possibly Jay seem to have covered something up, it’s likely a distraction, as *Only Murders in the Building* often uses misleading clues. Each season has featured a surprising twist – like the secrets surrounding Zoe’s death in Season 1, uncovering the truth about Cinda Canning’s podcast in Season 2, Loretta’s hidden family connection in Season 3, and the Westies’ scheme in Season 4. Now, Mabel, Oliver, and Charles know the billionaires were competing for a casino contract, but it’s not yet clear if that’s related to the murders. Plus, they still don’t know who the last person at the game was – that person could be the one truly responsible for everything.
Many mysteries still surround the billionaire suspects in the case. We don’t know what happened to Jay’s finger, who was removed from the security footage the night Lester died, or how a finger ended up in the shrimp – and how it all relates to the casino deal. This makes them look even more suspicious, especially given how deeply involved they’ve been this season. It’s possible one of them is the killer, forcing the others to help cover it up. That would be a surprising turn after four seasons of killers hiding in plain sight, but with so many secrets still out there, a bigger twist feels likely. This twist will probably involve Nicky and whoever was the last person at the poker game. While the billionaires currently seem like the most likely suspects, things could easily change in the final three episodes of the season.
