As a long-time Instagram user, I’m seeing they’re really stepping up teen safety! They’re basically creating a ‘PG-13’ experience for younger users, limiting the content they see to things that are more age-appropriate. It sounds like they’re locking teen accounts to only show them content designed for 13-year-olds and up, which is a pretty big change.
Starting October 14th, Instagram is making big changes to accounts used by teenagers. All users under 18 will have their accounts set to a new default setting, similar to a PG-13 movie rating. If a teen wants to change this setting, their parents will need to give permission.
Meta explained in a blog post that they’ve updated features for 13-year-olds to better match the content experience of a PG-13 movie on Instagram, even though movies and social media are different.
Similar to how PG-13 movies sometimes have mature themes or language, teens might occasionally come across similar content on Instagram. We’re committed to minimizing these instances and keeping them as infrequent as possible.
Instagram restricts teen accounts to PG-13 content
Instagram is updating its rules to limit content that includes strong language, dangerous activities, and things that could promote harmful behavior—for example, posts about marijuana use. This expands on current policies that already prohibit sexually suggestive material, shocking images, and ads for adult products like alcohol and tobacco.
Instagram will prevent teens from following accounts that post content unsuitable for their age or suggest adult topics in their profile. If a teen is already following such accounts, Instagram will stop them from seeing posts, sending messages, or viewing comments from those accounts.

Meta is giving parents more control with a new “Limited Content” setting. This option filters out even more content and limits who can see and interact with a teen’s posts. Parents can also choose “More Content,” which allows teens to see content similar to what’s shown in PG-13 movies, but with some safety features in place.
I’m really glad to see Instagram rolling out its new PG-13 update! It’s starting now in the US, UK, Australia, and Canada, and they’re planning to have it everywhere by the end of 2025. What’s even better is that Instagram says they’ll eventually find a way to protect younger teens even if they try to say they’re older than they are. And it’s not just Instagram – Facebook is getting similar age-based restrictions too, which is a huge relief.
The PG-13 movie rating has always been a bit of a compromise, notably permitting one instance of strong language. Now, Instagram hopes to apply a similar approach to create a safer environment for its younger users.
It’s still unclear if Instagram’s new rating system will work well, but it’s part of a growing trend of countries tightening rules on social media. For example, Australia is considering banning platforms like Twitch, Steam, and Reddit for anyone under 16.
