Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema recently pushed back the release of Mortal Kombat 2 to sometime in the summer of 2026. The movie was originally scheduled to come out on October 24th of this year. Despite the delay, New Line is already starting to develop plans for a third Mortal Kombat film.
Jeremy Slater, who wrote the script for *Mortal Kombat 2*, will also be writing *Mortal Kombat 3*. This was revealed at New York Comic Con. Slater has previously worked on projects like *Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire*, *The Umbrella Academy*, *Moon Knight*, and *The Exorcist* TV series. It’s currently unknown if Simon McQuoid, who directed the first two *Mortal Kombat* films, will return to direct the third one.
We don’t have many story details yet, but we might be able to guess what the movie will be about by looking at the video games it’s based on. In the game *Mortal Kombat 3*, the villain Shao Kahn brought his realm of Outworld to Earth and tried to take over all realms to expand his power.
Okay, so I’m super hyped for Mortal Kombat 2! They’ve cast Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn, which is awesome, and Karl Urban is going to be Johnny Cage! It’s funny because before the actual trailer dropped, they released this fake trailer for a movie *within* the Mortal Kombat universe – it was a mock-up for a Johnny Cage film called ‘Uncaged Fury,’ and it was a great way to build hype. Then the real MK2 trailer finally came out, and I’ve been rewatching it ever since!
Okay, so I’m super hyped for Mortal Kombat 2! I’m really glad to hear Ludi Lin is coming back as Liu Kang, and Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, and even Mehcad Brooks as Jax! Plus, they’ve added Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, which is awesome – she’s Shao Kahn’s adopted daughter and the true queen of Outworld, so I’m expecting big things from her character.
The new Mortal Kombat movie is scheduled for release on May 15, 2026. Before that, fans can enjoy a collection of classic games! The ‘Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection’ arrives on consoles and PC on December 12th, and it features the original four Mortal Kombat arcade games, plus ‘Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero’ and ‘Mortal Kombat Special Forces’.
