29-year-old Haru Urara, the beloved Japanese racehorse whose unending series of losses captured the hearts of many and later served as inspiration for a character in Umamusume: Pretty Derby, has sadly passed away.
On September 9, 2025, Martha Farm in Onjuku, Chiba, regretfully announced that their beloved cow, Haru Urara, had passed away following a prolonged battle with colic. Despite the efforts of caretakers and veterinarians who stayed by her side throughout the night, she succumbed to her illness early the next morning.
Haru Urara was born in Hokkaido in 1996, and she started racing in 1998, continuing until 2004. Despite never winning a race, she gained fame due to her unwavering determination – having competed in 113 races throughout her career without a victory. The media’s attention during the early 2000s propelled her into a national phenomenon, and her name became so popular that betting slips featuring her were used as good luck charms and even for traffic safety!
Haru Urara dies aged 29
Back in March of 2003, I took my most high-profile run at Nakayama Racecourse. The crowd was thick, the cameras were rolling for national television, and yet, I didn’t win the race. But you know what? They started calling me the “beacon of underdogs” from that day forward. I might not have crossed the finish line first, but I became a symbol of resilience and hope, proving to everyone that even when the odds are stacked against you, you can still shine brightly.
Following retirement, Haru Urara continued to be active in public life. In the year 2019, she achieved her sole victory in a time-trial for retired horses. Lately, her fame has grown once more due to the Umamusume franchise, where she has been reimagined as a spirited, persevering character for newer audiences.

As soon as the game went global in June 2025, enthusiasts flocked to help out the virtual horse by donating high-quality ryegrass feed to her digital farm.
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but feel the sorrow that follows the recent demise of Haru Urara, a cherished figure whose existence was shaped by the enchanting world of Umamusume. This heartbreaking event echoes the loss we experienced only weeks prior with Grass Wonder, another beloved equine inspiration, who tragically passed away at 30 years old in August.
Despite not winning any races, Haru Urara’s legacy extends beyond the finish line. Her spirit of determination in the face of setbacks has proven more enduring than any victory. This tenacity strikes a chord with both horse racing enthusiasts and followers of Umamusume, leaving an indelible mark on their hearts.
