Greta Lee is celebrated for her deeply moving performances in films like *Past Lives* and TV series such as *Russian Doll* and *The Morning Show*. But her latest role in the action-packed *Tron: Ares* is a departure from what she’s done before, demanding a lot more physical strength. To prepare, she started working with a trainer and is now sharing details about her intense training process, including guidance from a Marvel trainer and Brie Larson, and how all the hard work ultimately paid off.
During a recent appearance on *LIVE with Kelly and Mark*, Jamie Lee Curtis discussed how her new movie differed from her previous roles and the new skills she learned, such as motorcycle riding and long-distance running. She admitted the highly anticipated 2025 film was intimidating, as it required her to do things she’d never done before and get into much better physical shape – she joked she wasn’t quite at Tom Cruise’s level yet. She then shared:
Look, I’m just a regular guy – mid-forties, two kids, and honestly, I can’t even drive a manual car. So when I got the call about this role, I had to do some serious research. I’m talking ‘how to ride a motorcycle’ and ‘how to run like Tom Cruise’ level research, let me tell you!
Once Lee started working with a trainer, she felt capable of anything. Disney went all out for the cast of *Tron: Ares*, and provided Lee with the same trainer who helped many Marvel actors get into superhero physique. She connected with Brie Larson, who famously transformed for *Captain Marvel*, and was inspired to achieve a similar level of fitness. As Lee explained:
I needed to hire a personal trainer. I’m curious to hear what you all think of my progress. They recommended Duffy, who trains a lot of famous actors – apparently, all the Chrises, Kelly, Brad Pitt, and now me. I basically had to start completely from scratch. I was even looking at videos of Brie Larson doing one-armed pull-ups, which was intimidating! It’s funny, though, because despite all the work – I actually got abs for the first time ever, thanks to him – you never even get to see them!
Lee spent most of the movie in a biker suit, so even though she was in incredible shape, she didn’t really get a chance to show off her physique. The training was still worthwhile, though – she was able to perform some of her own stunts and run for extended periods. Still, Lee admits she’d hoped for a scene in *Tron: Ares* where her abs were visible, and she joked about it.
We’d love to have a fight scene that really shows off our physical work – maybe one where our costumes get damaged or ripped. We put a lot of effort into our training, and it’s frustrating that it isn’t visible.
I understand wanting to show off after getting into amazing shape for a role, especially in an action movie. We’ve seen it a lot with superhero films – actors like Chris Pratt in *Guardians of the Galaxy* and Henry Cavill in *Man of Steel* get to show off their physiques. I feel like the actress in *Tron: Ares* deserved that same opportunity to visually showcase her hard work, instead of just talking about it. Hopefully, if there’s a sequel, she’ll get a chance to shine and show off her physique.
See Golden Globe nominee Jared Leto in *Tron: Ares*, now playing in theaters everywhere. If you’re a fan of the *Tron* universe, you can also stream the original *Tron* and *Tron: Legacy* on Disney+. Plus, don’t miss Greta Lee in Kathryn Bigelow’s *A House of Dynamite*, coming to Netflix on October 24th.
