Approximately four decades ago, Kevin Costner conceived an idea for a cinematic series based on the authentic tales of America’s Old West. This concept eventually grew into a strategy to create a quartet of films that would narrate a story encompassing a span of twelve years. In recent times, in 2022, he commenced production on the inaugural chapter, titled “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1“, and by the following year, work on “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2” also got underway.
In 2024, Costner didn’t delay the releases of both films, with only three months separating them. Regrettably, due to the poor performance of Chapter 1 at the box office, the cinematic launch of Chapter 2 was indefinitely postponed, with no further release date announced as of yet. Instead, Chapter 2 premiered exclusively at film festivals in Venice and Santa Barbara. Consequently, production on Chapter 3 was temporarily halted.
Despite facing challenges, Costner remains determined to conclude the saga. During a conversation at the Venice Film Festival in 2024, he shared his thoughts: “I’m unsure about how I’ll produce part 3 at this moment, but I will make it happen.
Currently, Sam Worthington, a key cast member, is back discussing the series Horizon (as reported by Filmstarts). Interestingly, the actor mentioned that the decision to return to the set and carry on the story hinges solely on one factor – viewer engagement.
Costner poured his heart into this project over a decade, and now its success hinges on audience engagement. Passion is an inherent part of his work, but sometimes the timing has to be just right for people to fully appreciate it.
The current situation suggests that the fate of Costner’s upcoming western projects is uncertain for the time being. If there is enough audience demand, it might be possible for the filmmaker to wrap up the incomplete projects and present them to the public. At this point, one movie is yet to be released, while work on another has been partially finished but needs completion. As of now, there’s no promising news regarding the future of Horizon, and everyone is keeping a watchful eye. There’s a chance that this Western epic could be abandoned in its mid-production phase.
