2 Green Lanterns Are Back From the Dead, Including a Surprise DC Hero

Look, as a huge comic book fan, I’ve learned that death is practically a revolving door for superheroes. It feels like every big crossover event has someone kicking the bucket, only to be brought back a few issues later. Recently, the big *Green Lantern* storyline wrapped up, and it brought back *two* heroes from the dead. But what really got people talking wasn’t just that they returned, it was how long one of them had been gone – seriously, this hero had been pushing up daisies for ages!

The latest issue of Green Lantern Corps (#9) concluded the ‘Starbreaker Supremacy’ storyline. Written by Morgan Hampton and Jeremy Adams, with artwork by Fernando Pasarin, the issue featured several resurrections and wrapped up the conflict with a race of energy vampires who aimed to eliminate all emotion from the universe.

The Green Lantern Corps successfully rebuilt the Central Power Batteries on Oa. These new Batteries ultimately destroyed Starbreaker and his army, drawing them in and incinerating them as they attempted to absorb the immense energy. While the Corps rejoiced in their victory, they didn’t realize two of their members had survived and were elsewhere.

What Green Lanterns were brought back from the dead?

The comic ends with a Green Lantern ring traveling to the Dark Sector, searching for someone new to choose as a Lantern. It arrives at a farm where John Stewart, who recently passed away, is working. He’s with a woman who has magenta skin and dark hair, and who seems to be Katma Tui – a previous Green Lantern and John Stewart’s wife.

Stewart died near the end of the novel *The Starbreaker Supremacy*, giving his life and a powerful energy source to restore the Central Power Batteries. Since he was also going to be a main character in the new *Lanterns* TV show, it wasn’t much of a surprise when he came back to life. But the return of Katma Tui is a completely different situation.

Katma Tui first appeared to die in 1988, in an issue of Action Comics, killed by Star Sapphire. She was brought back to life when John Stewart became the first human to join the Guardians of the Universe, but died again during the ‘Emerald Twilight’ storyline in 1994. Most recently, in 2017, Hal Jordan had a brief encounter with her spirit in the Emerald Space, a kind of afterlife for Green Lanterns who have passed away.

It’s a mystery why Katma Tui is back, and why she appears to have a robotic leg. If Stewart was responsible for her return, it seems odd he didn’t also heal her injuries. This situation will probably create problems for Stewart, especially since he’s already been rumored to be in a relationship with Hawkwoman, Shayera Thal.

Green Lantern Corps #9 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
