According to reports, Ubisoft has cancelled a planned Assassin’s Creed game that would have taken place during the Reconstruction period. This decision follows criticism regarding Assassin’s Creed Shadows and its choice of a Black samurai, Yasuke, as the main character.
Game File reports that the canceled Assassin’s Creed game was planned to take place in post-Civil War America. Players would have controlled a Black protagonist who escaped slavery and joined the Assassin Brotherhood. The game’s story would have involved returning to the American South to fight against injustice and the growing threat of the Ku Klux Klan.
According to three sources at Game File, development on the game stopped last July when managers in Paris made the decision to cancel it. Some employees believe this happened because Ubisoft was hesitant to face more criticism, following complaints from players who doubted how accurately the game portrayed the historical figure Yasuke.
The political situation in the United States was also a significant issue. As one developer put it, the game was simply “too political for such a divided country.”

People working on the project expressed excitement about it and were surprised and upset by the decision to cancel it, saying the stated reasons didn’t make much sense.
This wouldn’t be the first game to depict conflicts with the Ku Klux Klan. The group has appeared in other popular titles like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Mafia 3.
Ubisoft has paused development on the Assassin’s Creed game set during the Reconstruction era, likely due to increasing concerns about tackling sensitive political topics. It’s currently unknown if the project will be revisited later.
