As horror fans, we often search for movies that aren’t popular or well-known. We enjoy discovering and collecting lesser-known films, and there’s a special feeling that comes with finding an overlooked gem. Every year around Halloween, we eagerly look for a new hidden treasure to add to our favorites.
Many great horror films don’t get much attention in theaters or through marketing, and often get lost among countless other options. You usually have to discover them on your own – or find them on a list like this one. Luckily, Tubi is a fantastic platform for finding hidden horror gems alongside popular titles. While Shudder is also great for horror fans, Tubi stands out because it’s completely free. Here are some of the many underrated horror movies you can stream on Tubi right now.
Wicked City

Year: 1987Run time: 1hr 22mDirector: Yoshiaki Kawajiri
This anime film is a dark, neo-noir horror with a lot of graphic content, including body horror, sexual themes, and nudity. It centers around an attempt to create peace between demons and humans, and intentionally evokes the gritty, provocative style of 1980s horror. Had it been released today, when anime is much more popular, it would likely have gained a much wider audience, especially given its impressive animation.
Pandorum

Released in 2009 and running for 1 hour and 48 minutes, this sci-fi horror-action film, directed by Christian Alvaret and produced by Paul W. S. Anderson (known for *Resident Evil*), takes place on a colony ship where most of the passengers are in cryosleep. The movie is designed to be psychologically unsettling, creating a disorienting experience for the viewer. If you like intense action, gore, and stories about people fighting for survival, this film is for you.
Backcountry

Released in 2014, this 1 hour and 32 minute film directed by Adam MacDonald is a harrowing story set in the Canadian wilderness. Based on a terrifying true event from 2005, it depicts a brutal bear attack with shocking realism. Be warned: this movie is intensely graphic and not for those easily disturbed, and it doesn’t shy away from the horrific nature of the attack.
Capture Kill Release

Released in 2016, this 96-minute found footage film, directed by Nick McAnulty and Brian Allan Stewart, explores a fracturing relationship alongside the emergence of a serial killer. It offers a unique take on the darkness hidden within seemingly normal suburban life, even with a simple storyline. The film suggests that even partners in crime don’t always stay together.
The Blackcoat’s Daughter

Year: 2015
Run time: 1h 33m
Director: Osgood Perkins
A deserted boarding school covered in snow is already unsettling, but when you add young women with knives and a hint of the supernatural, things quickly turn deadly. Director Osgood Perkins has a talent for creating atmosphere, and this, his first feature film, is a beautifully crafted example. The strong performances from Kiernan Shipka, Lucy Boynton, and Emma Roberts make for a truly compelling horror film led by women.
Hounds of Love

Year: 2016
Run time: 1h 48m
Director: Ben Young
Sometimes, the most frightening things aren’t monsters or masked villains, but the real-life horrors that actually happen. This Australian thriller taps into that fear, reminding us that terrifying crimes, like those committed by serial killers targeting vulnerable people, are not just the stuff of movies. The film is unsettling because of its realism, but the actors deliver strong performances, especially Ashleigh Cummings, who plays the resourceful protagonist fighting for her survival by turning her captors against each other.
Tragedy Girls (2017)

Year: 2017
Run time: 1h 38m
Director: Tyler McIntyre
This movie delivers a playfully queer romance, laugh-out-loud horror, and plenty of gore. Director Tyler McIntyre cleverly satirizes the world of aspiring social media influencers, and the film feels particularly timely even years after its 2017 release. The charming connection between Alexandra Shipp and Brianna Hildebrand elevates the whole experience.
Mom and Dad (2017)

Released in 2017, this darkly comedic horror film (running 1 hour and 26 minutes) presents a disturbing scenario: parents turning against their children. Directed by Brian Taylor, the movie features a fantastic performance by Nicolas Cage, alongside Selma Blair, making for a surprisingly entertaining and often unsettling experience. It’s a bloody and funny film that will likely elicit laughter in unexpected moments, culminating in a tricky situation for the characters involved.
Villains

Year: 2019
Run time: 1h 30m
Director: Dan Berk and Robert Olsen
This movie is as wild as the premise suggests: a couple breaking into the home of a disturbingly cruel married couple. Thankfully, the actors – Maika Monroe, Bill Skarsgård, Jeffrey Donovan, and Kyra Sedwick – all deliver convincing performances, which makes the film even more fun to watch. It’s a horror comedy that goes beyond simple scares, prompting you to consider the complexities of human nature and what true courage really means – it’s not about being a typical hero.
Sissy

Year: 2022
Run time: 1h 42m
Director: Hannah Barlow and Kane Senes
There’s a real need for more scary movies featuring influencers whose bachelorette party goes horribly wrong – and gets violent. “Talk to Me” is a vibrant, funny, and uniquely Australian horror-comedy that also works as a solid slasher film. Aisha Dee is fantastic in the lead role, making you genuinely care about her character, even when she starts making questionable choices.
