Nintendo is seeking millions of dollars in damages from James Williams, a Reddit moderator who ran a page dedicated to illegally downloaded Switch games. Last year, Nintendo filed a lawsuit against Williams, who used the online name Archbox.
Nintendo is suing a man named Williams for $4.5 million, claiming he ran websites that illegally copied and distributed Switch games. According to a legal document shared online by Oatmeal Dome, Williams also sold devices that bypassed Nintendo’s security measures and pre-loaded consoles with pirated games. Nintendo says they previously asked him to stop, but he ignored their requests, leading to the lawsuit.
Last year, Nintendo investigated and discovered that Ryan Williams was operating the Archbox Reddit account. Williams reportedly made it easier for them to identify him by posting personal information online and by sending his Nintendo Switch in for repairs. Because Williams didn’t respond to the lawsuit by the court’s deadline, Nintendo automatically won the case against him.
This year, Nintendo won lawsuits that forced the closure of two popular emulators, Yuzu for the Switch and Citra for the 3DS. While they haven’t taken legal action yet, the new AI video generator Sora 2 is full of videos featuring Mario and Pikachu that seem to have been created without Nintendo’s approval. Nintendo is also currently suing the developers of the game Palworld, and they recently received a patent that could create challenges for any future games similar to Pokémon.
