Ben Stiller’s new documentary about his parents, *Stiller & Meara: Nothing Is Lost*, prompted him to think about his own separation from his wife, Christine Taylor, which lasted from 2017 to 2022. The film, which premiered at the New York Film Festival on October 6th, features a conversation between Stiller and Taylor about their split after 17 years of marriage, according to *People* magazine. Stiller realized that the example of his parents’ close relationship – both as a married couple and as working partners – influenced his own fears. Taylor, who appeared in several of Stiller’s films like *Dodgeball* and *Zoolander* after becoming known as Marcia Brady in the *Brady Bunch* movies, was also part of this discussion. Despite his parents having a strong marriage, which the documentary explores, Stiller was worried about becoming too dependent on his partner. He admitted he thought, “I don’t want to become my parents,” when he and Taylor first got together.
Taylor explained to Ben Stiller that their past relationship carried a lot of weight, particularly because of how intensely they had been involved – constantly sharing all aspects of their lives. She also felt he worried about how their relationship would be perceived by others, adding that the situation felt very complicated and sensitive.
Ben Stiller and his wife separated in 2017 but later reconnected during the COVID-19 pandemic. He felt like a failure during their time apart, especially when comparing himself to his parents’ long and successful marriage. They grew closer again while living together during lockdown, and Stiller began working on a documentary that prompted them to discuss their relationship, their struggles, and his parents’ marriage in a new light. He’s grateful his wife didn’t end up with someone like the character George Glass from his movie, ‘Meet the Parents’!
