Fans expecting a huge, freely explorable world in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond may be disappointed. Nintendo has clarified that Samus won’t be using her motorcycle as much as some people anticipated.
The latest trailer for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond features Samus exploring large environments on a motorcycle called the Vi-O-La. Its wheels are designed with a pattern that resembles Samus’s Morph Ball. Even while riding, Samus can still use her arm cannon to defeat enemies.
Many fans thought the large, open areas shown in trailers meant Metroid Prime 4: Beyond would be an open-world game, or at least feature some open-world exploration. The official Japanese website for the game has now confirmed how these areas will actually be used.
Samus’ Bike Can Only Be Used In Certain Locations

Players won’t be able to freely roam the alien world on Samus’s Vi-O-La bike like in Grand Theft Auto. Nintendo has confirmed the bike is limited to certain areas and Samus needs to get off to continue exploring. It’s a tool for reaching specific locations, but not for general travel throughout the entire game.
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will likely feature large areas connecting its dungeons, but it won’t be a fully open-world game where you can freely roam, discover hidden items, or play through the game in any order you choose.
The Vi-O-La is a neat new feature in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, and it’s arguably Samus’ most powerful new ability. It’s a bit disappointing that it won’t be used constantly, but the game will likely have some amazing moments built around it, and we can probably expect a boss fight that involves riding a motorcycle.
