Elizabeth Olsen has discussed the criticism Marvel movies sometimes receive, and how it affects her role as Scarlet Witch moving forward.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has experienced some highs and lows lately, and many fans are starting to feel a bit overwhelmed with superhero content. After the big finale with Avengers: Endgame in 2019, Marvel Studios significantly increased the amount of movies and Disney+ shows they released, building towards the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday in 2026 and Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027.
With so many Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies and shows being released, some viewers are starting to feel overwhelmed and less excited about the content. 2025 has been an uneven year for the studio so far. *Captain America: Brave New World* earned $415 million, but our review called it simply “okay” and somewhat confusing. *Thunderbolts* brought in $382 million, and *The Fantastic Four: First Steps* made $515 million.
Even though Marvel movies haven’t all been hits lately, the actress who plays the Scarlet Witch addressed concerns that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is losing its popularity.
Elizabeth Olsen says Marvel fans are the focus, not critics
During a discussion at the Hampton International Film Festival on October 4th, Elizabeth Olsen mentioned she’d like to see more Scarlet Witch storylines adapted from the comics. She also briefly addressed some of the criticism Marvel has received.
I really enjoy this work and always look forward to coming back to it. The past five years have been amazing because I’ve been able to explore the character in ways I never imagined. There are still storylines from the comics I’d love to adapt – things I think the fans would really appreciate too.
“I mean, these movies aren’t for critics, these movies are for fans.”
She then explained that working on Marvel Cinematic Universe films is similar to being on a long-running TV series, in terms of how actors approach their roles.
It’s nice when you have a TV show you can always go back to. But it’s rare to be involved in a long-running series—even if people sometimes get tired of them—because those projects really feel like family.
Elizabeth Olsen has already confirmed she won’t be appearing in *Avengers: Doomsday*, which is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 18, 2026.
