Japan Airlines‘ CEO, Mitsuko Tottori, is reducing her salary as a result of recent flight delays caused by employees who were under the influence of alcohol.
Look, as a gamer, I get delays – lag spikes, server crashes… it’s annoying! But flying? Forget about it. There’s always something holding things up. It could be a problem with the plane itself, people just being late to the gate, or even air traffic controllers going on strike. Seriously, it feels like dealing with constant glitches!
Occasionally, flights are delayed due to issues with the airline’s personnel. For example, pilots and flight attendants might reach their maximum working hours after previous delays, which can lead to further delays or even cancellation of your flight.
Japan Airlines recently experienced a 30-minute delay on a domestic flight when two flight attendants were found to have exceeded the legal alcohol limit. The airline needed to find replacement crew members, causing the delay.

Japan Airlines prohibits its staff from consuming alcohol for twelve hours before any flight. This comes after a recent incident where two employees lost track of time and each had two beers and two glasses of wine, as reported by Paddle Your Own Kanoo.
Because of this issue, CEO Mitsuko Tottori will reduce her salary by 30% for two months. Additionally, safety manager Yukio Nakagawa and cabin services manager Junko Nakano will each have their salaries reduced by 20% for one month.
According to PYKO, all of the company’s other directors will receive a 10% pay cut for one month.

According to the report, the CEO has repeatedly chosen to reduce their own pay rather than discipline employees. This has happened three times in the past year, including instances where pilots were found to have been drinking.
Pilots haven’t always followed the rules either. For example, an Air Canada pilot once flew planes using a fake license.
A pilot flying with IcelandAir made a very low, unscheduled pass over the airport during what would be his final flight. The airline reported this incident to the police.
