Sega creates life-size Sonic with synthetic “Sonic DNA” for 35th anniversary

Okay, so Sega just dropped something seriously cool for Sonic’s 35th birthday! They made a full-size statue of Sonic, and get this – it’s got some kind of synthetic DNA inside, like they actually captured a piece of him! It’s a wild way to celebrate, but I’m totally here for it.

You won’t believe this, but Sega has actually made a Sonic the Hedgehog figure that contains the character’s DNA – and I’m not kidding! It’s easily one of the strangest things I’ve written about all year.

The recent press release reveals that Sonic’s origins were developed with help from LOM BABY, a group known for creating biotech exhibits featuring things like lab-grown dragon meat, alien DNA, and even a sample of the T-Virus from the Resident Evil video game.

Creating a DNA sample for Sonic the Hedgehog is surprisingly strange – and lives up to expectations!

Sega creates Sonic figure with “Sonic DNA”

To create a ‘genetic code’ for Sonic, the team studied everything that makes him unique – his look, personality, special moves, and even his weakness of not being able to swim. They then turned these traits into a DNA sequence, which Sega believes captures the essence of Sonic.

Sonic’s genetic code was contained inside a bright green Chaos Emerald and then placed inside the Sonic statue itself. It’s like something out of Frankenstein – the statue even has a clear window, letting fans see the emerald within and get a glimpse of what makes Sonic… Sonic!

Sega explains this decision by saying they want to ensure Sonic remains popular and relevant for years to come. It’s a grand statement – almost like preserving DNA in a lab, but thankfully without any dangerous creatures running loose!

If you want to check out the full-sized Sonic statue – made with actual DNA from Sonic himself! – head to the Sega store in Shibuya, Tokyo starting on June 23rd.

Although recreating animals like those in the movie Sonic is still far off, one genetic engineering company has already made progress by successfully breeding dire wolf puppies and attempting to revive extinct blue antelopes.
